ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Cubs and Diamondbacks are expected to continue their trade talks regarding Jeff Samardzija into the offseason.

The D'Backs discussed a potential deal with the Cubs prior to the trade deadline but found the asking price to be too high. Olney notes that the Cubs are "reaching a point" where they have to make a decision whether to sign the righty to an extension or trade him. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported the same thing at the trade deadline. Samardzija made $2.64 million this season and is arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter. Nov 4 - 6:44 PM

Archie and Corbin better not be involved.

Especially on a guy who is a free agent candidate. Trading Corbin would be INSANE.. which is why I wouldn't put it past Towers. Although, he is in the last year of his deal, might be willing to pull some strings to enter "win now" mode. Which would be ridiculous.

I bet Skaggs is the most likely piece being discussed. I personally do not like the thought of overpaying for a #2 SP at best. I would rather send some smaller pieces to MIL for Gallardo. ARZ is not going to go after Price but to focus on Samardjia is a mistake unless ARZ can keep Corbin, Skaggs & Bradley. Maybe Eaton & Holmberg but CHI is going to want more.

Why would Towers care about the D-Backs future? If he doesn't win this year he is gone so he might as well mortgage the future to get a contract extension. A lame duck GM is the worst thing you can have in sports.

Not that I hate Samardizja, but I don't see how this helps us at all. He's 29, has a career 4.19 ERA (and climbing as a starter), and is a RHP. I simply don't see the benefit, and if we trade one of our young guns (including Skaggs), I'd be seriously upset.

Unless we're giving up spare parts for him, the answer should be a resounding "no."

Christ... I'd puke blood if this happened. I wouldnt give up any of our top 10 prospects in the organization for him. Not only is he about to get paid but the guy isnt all that good in the first place.

I can just see Towers flipping Davidson and Skaggs for him, then tossing the Jizzer a 90 million 5 year contract.

Yup. This is the price of what some like 82 suggest in giving Towers one mor year. He's going to trade young cheap talent for the chance to win now. We are still looking for a power outfield bat even after we grab a starting pitcher. Forget about the BP. That might just a a cross your fingers situation.

Yea, yea, yea... So what should a team do, fire a guy because they have no intention of extending him? Or, extend him? All just to avoid the lame duck scenario??
Anyway, I'll let the chips fall and see exactly what Towers does, and then decide why he made the moves he made...
As for Samardzja, I really don't see much about him worthy of our attention. However, the Cubs are almost desperate to unload him... If that means KT can grab him for relatively cheap value in return, so be it...
And YES!! We desperately need a power outfield bat. I heard KT on the radio a few weeks back and he made sure to put that out there. In fact, it almost seemed that was a bigger priority above anything else - finding a legit power outfield bat... We'll see...

Pretty sure I've made my opinion known 82 ;)

You know that successful businesses don't get cornered like this. They anticipate and take initiative. Simply put, the DBacks ownership hasn't shown me they have the vision or ability to run a MLB team and the lame duck GM of 2014 is just the latest example. Do you really advocate this business decision? Would you want a CEO that was on a 1 year contract to produce a particular profit goal? They would gut the company in order to reach the numbers that year come hell or high water.

There is no doubt that in a perfect world, we wouldn't be stuck with a lame duck GM, as well as a lame duck manager... I just don't believe you, or I, know enough about what was, is, or will be happening that might have created this situation. I am willing to give Derek Hall & the ownership the benefit of the doubt in this situation.
It is not ideal by any stretch and my hunch is that Hall feels the same way. But, without full knowledge of all conditions and factors that led to this situation, I just won't condemn the team and make judgements about their ability to run a team... yet...

WHY in the HE11 would we want a 29 year old pitcher with a career 4.32 ERA as a starter?!?!?

and dear front office, don't even try to sell this junk to us as a #1.

We have a solid foundation with Corbin and Miley and two top prospects in Bradley and Skaggs (on cheap contract nonetheless). To me this says if we can find one or two back of the rotation guys out of Delgado, Cahill and McCarthy we should stand pat on our starting rotation and count on our young homegrown talent a la the St. Louis Cardinals.

PLEASE front office, learn from your past mistakes (see Scherzer & Parker)

Jesus can we go get a bat?

FYI Samardizja is not as bad as just his ERA and Age indicate. Gotta look deeper sometimes. He is a good pitcher with upside.

Saying that I am not trying to give up a Top 8 prospect for him so if thats the price, keep walking!

Not surprised... that seems to be KT's MO. Always a good way to go into negotiating situations be making a bold announcement about how desperate you are. Only thing that would have made it a more "KT" announcement is if he had thrown some current players under the bus... just to undermine their value.

Fly-ball pitcher who's learned how to get some ground balls. Capable of big games, I think he's reached his ceiling. He is what he is: Better than most of the guys on the D-Backs, not worth what the D-Backs will end up paying him.

For Samardzija? Highly unlikely either will be involved. I think its also safe to say both Owings and Davidson are unlikely, with the team pretty set at SS with Baez and Castro and 3B with Olt, Vitters and Bryant waiting in the wings.

Worst case I can think of is maybe Skaggs, Trahan and some other parts for him.

Even if it were for Skaggs straight up, I say NO WAY. Skaggs is every bit as talented as Samardzija and much cheaper and under contract for years to come. STOP F'ing with our young talent!!!

Agree. Have seen a lot of Smardjziza in his time with the Cubs. Just a guy with decent stuff. Kinda Todd Stottlemire-like.

I'm all for us going after Masahiro Tanaka, becasue he doesn't cost us anything but money. But NO to anyone that costs us our young prospects. I'm very comfortable with these 4 as 4 of our 5. If Delgado or Cahill fill the #5 spot, so be it, if we get Tanaka, great, but DON'T repeat the same mistake we made with Scherzer and Parker. We keep trading your prospects in search of a #1 and those young prospects KEEP BECOMING #1'S!!!!

Some are focusing on wins and losses, as well as ERA. If you look outside the box, and are under the agreement that both stats can be greatly misleading, he's not a bad pitcher. He has a pretty good career WHIP, has a high strikeout rate and has shown improvement each of the last three seasons. Also, even though he's going to be 29 in January, I still think he has room for upside and development.

If you look at what the Tigers landed for Doug Fister, it gives me belief Arizona can net Shark without giving up Skaggs or Bradley.

I personally wouldn't at all be upset with a rotation of Corbin, Shark, Tanaka (who I am hopeful AZ signs), Miley and Delgado this year.

It would a major miracle if the Dbacks grabbed Tanaka... It's been reported that he will command a $50-$75 million posting fee to his Japan team, and then receive another $75 million contract from whichever major league signs him... This has the Yankees written all over it...
