So is he trying to get him to leave by bad mouthing him to the press?
Let's hope so. Montgomery was trash in St. Louis, had a brief moment of clarity in Texas, and then completely sucked as a DBack. No one with a 6+ ERA over that many starts should even be in MLB. Trade him to anyone else for a bucket of balls and eat the salary, Kendrick. You pulled the trigger on the deal, but don't exacerbate the problem by trying to "fix him" for 2025. Move on from Montgomery.

It is very likely that Montgomery stays the same or gets worse in 2025 if he stays with the DBacks. His 6.23 ERA was the WORST mark in MLB this season among pitchers with at least 100 innings. I am just stating my opinion, before another poster who must be Lovullo's wife or mom in real life chimes in.

So in his previous 7 seasons before this year, he essentially never had an ERA above 4 (excluding 2019 and 2020 due to Tommy John).
He turns 32 in December which puts him in his prime as a pitcher.
And you think he’s gonna get worse than this season?
I mean…

Disagree. He'll get better with a full offseason of not worrying (whining) about his contract and will focus on just baseball. The question becomes will he pitch up to his $22 million salary next year?

I would be very surprised if he didn't markedly improve with a full off season and spring training.

And I hope he has enough pride that he's embarrassed by this year and is looking to prove himself. He's also going to be in a contract year so hopefully that's also motivation.

Hope is a wonderful thing. Just be prepared for disappointment. He received $25,000,000 this season to be the worst pitcher in MLB. He's receiving $22,000,000 next season (unless Kendrick eats some or most of that salary and trades him). He may be in a contract year, but we just gave him $47,000,000 when "what have you done for me lately" is below zero. Kendrick admitted he made a terrible mistake. Why compound that mistake by keeping him around for another year (other than sunk costs)?
