Whats the source on these rumors?

Trading Shawn Green wouldnt be a bad idea for the Dbacks as it really opens up a lot of options for the team this offseason. While I think Green has been having a decent and underappreciated season (but not worth the $10M he's being paid), the $20M off the books by trading Green and letting Gonzo walk allows the team to pursue a legitimate power hitter and/or an improvement to the starting rotation in free agency this offseason. And of course, it opens up a slot in right field for Carlos Quentin, who appears to be at the least very capable in the big leagues so far.

The second rumor doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me. It would be a solid deal for the Dbacks. Yes, they lose Tracy (as well as Gonzo, but he's going to walk at the end of the year anyways), but Saunders, Taveras, and McPherson is a great return from an asset management standpoint. That said, this trade just doesnt make very much sense for the Astros or Angels. The Angels dont need Gonzo so desperately that they are willing to give up Saunders, and I dont see why the Astros have any interest in Tracy when they just traded for Huff. Im not buying this rumor, but its interesting to think about none the less.

Edit: Ensberg is on the DL, and isnt McPherson as well? Its pretty difficult to deal them anyways then.

I like Tracy... If we're going to add him in a trade it doesen't make sense to get a young centerfielder when Young is ready and he should be good. And also 2 other top outfielder prospects. If it's going to be a trade with him then we have to get a 3rd baseman back. Not really seeing Barden as the 3rd baseman of the future for us.

So with Abreu going to NYY, does that put pressure on the BoSox to get another bat? Maybe Shawn Green? Especially since T. Nixon got hurt.

Rumor has it the Sox are targeting Andruw Jones. Unfortunately for the Sox, don't expect Schuerholz and the Braves to give him up for dog meat like the Phillies did for Abreu. What a sorry franchise that is, they trade a superstar away every few years for absolutely nothing.

Everything seems pretty quiet on the Dbacks front which probably means absolutely nothing. I think Byrnes knows that the only way to get him over the hump in the NL West is a starting pitcher and the price for the mediocrity that is available is way too high. I think the DBacks should listen to offers for Julio, it looks like he's back to gaining weight and getting lit up again.

"After checking on Barry Zito, Dontrelle Willis and Jake Westbrook before today’s nonwaiver trading deadline, the Diamondbacks are still waiting for a trade proposal for a starting pitcher that makes sense to them.

ESPN reported Sunday night that the D-Backs offered top prospects Dustin Nippert or Tony Pena for Zito, although a top D-Backs official called that “close, but not that accurate.’’"

D-Backs still quiet as trade deadline nears
July 31
Arizona Republic (registration required): "The Diamondbacks have been targeting potential starting pitching help, and in recent days they seemed to have isolated their search toward Cleveland's Jake Westbrook but have been told the Indians will not part with him. There had been discussions about the Cubs' Greg Maddux, and that was still a slight possibility late Sunday. "

We would have to offer more to get Zito. Nippert is a good pitcher, but not a great pitcher. At least not yet.

Greg Maddux is done. I'd rather try and catch lightning in a bottle with a minor leaguer.

I like how Byrnes seems to know his own team (one of the most underrated aspects of being a GM) and realizes it's going to take strating pitching to get into the playoffs.

I would not say Maddux is done, but close to it, although he does have 9 wins on a terrible Cubs team. He would not make a impact on this team, as he is not better than Webb, Batista. I would say he would be the fourth or fifth starter on this team, and that is not a big improment. I really do not think there are any big names out there that I would give up our talent for. I would like to see Owings(sp?) a shot. He is 14 and 2 combined this year in AA and AAA, or Mike Bacsik, he is 10 and 0 this year with a 2.69 ERA.

trade that would have brought Zito to the desert

I wonder who we would've given up? Zito in Arizona would have been VERY nice.

Oh well. Catch the Pods.
