Arizona Republic -
An NBA source said Mike D'Antoni is first on Dallas' wish list to replace Johnson.

Chicago and New York also might be interested in D'Antoni, but GM Kerr said he would not grant permission to a team wishing to speak with D'Antoni.

Avery Johnson was let go as Dallas' head coach earlier this week.

A lot of teams would be happy to be the Suns. Of all the teams, I hope Dallas does not get him. A somewhat comparable analogy would be Dallas letting Steve Nash go only for Phoenix to sign him and he become MVP twice. D'Antoni is the perfect coach for Dallas.

D'Antoni is a very good coach. Phoenix fans will not find out how good until he's gone.

you know what,

after all the whining and complaining I've done about D'Antoni throughout the season..

I do KNOW, that with the right players those "short commings" will be minimized and he will be successful... even more than he is/was with the Suns.

The Mavs have very good defensive players, well... capable anyways.

And shooting too.


Give them, a run and gun offense, Kidd, Terry, Howard, Bass, Nowitski.. and the bench... Thats a capable team.



I'm basically saying, yes... D'Antoni is a "good" coach, stubborn, but he is good... but dont get that mixed with a "great" coach... Thats reserved for Popovic, Byron Scott etc

Dantonis system requires:

-Tons of shooters. Other than Terry and Dirk, Dallas has ZEERO.
- Big men who can pass. Whos dallas have?
-Athletic finishers. Zilch.



If anything, Avery is the perfect coach for the Suns. He's had experience playing in a system that knows how to utilize two big men. (Shaq and Amare) whom im more than sure will get on their asses about not playing defense. Avery is more disciplined. He'll tear Barbosa a new one and at least show him to look up at the hoop when he decides to take it for the lay up.

He won't like Nash any more than he did Kidd.. They both suck at defense.

Dallas' collapse has a lot to do with Dirk and the teams crushed psyche with the horrible loss to Miami and then to Golden State. I don't see how D'Antoni can fix that. Dallas needs to eliminate players, not just their coach.

the loss to miami should of been on the players. the loss to GS....avery should take some blame there for lot's of reasons. anyone who knows anything about that season in regards to the dallas mavs would put a lot of blame on johnson. I don't know who should be the dallas coach. not coach D IMO.

i actually don't think you have to have a title to be considered "great". I think if a coach has been to multiple NBA Finals or has shown the ability to resurrect completely different teams and turn them into contenders, that's a sign of greatness IMO and if they've done both, that's a no brainer. It's why I believe a guy like Sloan is a great coach and why Byron is getting there. Wouldn't call him necessarily great yet, but he's up there.

DA is indeed a better fit to Mavs than to Suns, as far as championship chance is concerned. Unlike the Suns, Mavs have a deeper and more developed bench. The players are better defensively and younger on average. They can do the run and gun style now what Suns can't really do anymore. And they can defend better when it's needed in the playoffs. Their only weakness vs. the Suns version of DA's system is probly that Kidd can't shoot, so that they don't really have the PNR weapon liek Nash-Amare. But, due to Nash's athletic inability, good teams have him figured out by now as just witnessed in the defeats to Spurs two years in a row.

Avery? are you kidding me? Avery shouldnt be anything but an assistant coach for an elite team. He is overrated. If Avery is hired we will be lucky to make postseason. Book It.!!

first of all, get a clue.

dallas has more shooter than dirk and terry. How about stackhouse? how about george or lue even? how about howard?

big men who can pass- dirk is one of the best in the game at this. what bigs do the suns have who can pass? uhhh diaw? that's it. that's not a must for this system.

finishers- stackhouse, howard, bass can all finish well. even terry and dirk are respectable. Look at the suns, our finishers consists of barbosa, amare, and hill. other than amare that's not impressive. shaq can't finish anywhere near as well as he used to.


and lastly, when was the last time avery coached a team with 2 good big men? he hasn't. dirk is the only big he's ever had to coach. You actually probably couldn't call shaq a good big anymore. he's about equal to dampier in my book.

Plus, the are already on the decline.

I'd love to see Antoni stay in the West...without a team with the talent of the suns, he will be exposed as a hack.

I'd be more fearful of Avery taking over a good offensive team with no defense, like Denver or Golden State.
