Moved to Portland a month ago for school and brought my directv equipment with me for Sunday Ticket. I go to install it and my apartment complex says that I can't. What a bunch of @*#&! Now, no Cardinals for me this year. If anyone feels sorry for me, you can send a donation to: I'mapoorstudentwhocan'twatchthecardinalsandnowhastospendthatdesignatedexpenseonchicksandbeer@iwon.com; via paypal.

I wonder how busted I would get if I streamed the Cardinals game live over my webserver?

Try doing what I did when I was living in Fla. and had the dish.

Mount the dish on a tripod and put it on your balcony every weekend.

Make sure to mark the postion of the tripod legs so that you don't have to realign it evry weekend. If that doesn't work mount it so that it points thru a window (make sure the window is open, it doesn't work thru glass)

A lot of apartments don't like the dish in a visible spot on the side of their building, but what they can't see wouldn't hurt them.

Best of luck

You don't get busted if you don't get caught...

...Then again, IF you get caught you better hope you're rich...

I noticed in flagstaff when I was up there for training camp that alot of places had "portable" satellite direct tv dishes - on a tripod looking thing..as wildfire says..you should give that a try and drag it out when you want to watch a game...your installer should be familiar with how this works..if not - try a different installer.

I would go with the tripod as Wildfire suggested just to avoid confrontation. But for a little fire power if they complain they can not keep you from getting a dish installed for satellite TV. It was a part of a huge lawsuit a few years back when the cable companies tried to shut out dishes with covenants and so forth. I should clarify the they can't stop you part. What they don't have to do is allow you to attach it permanently to their building. Hence the booming sales of tripods.

Have fun and order up Sunday Ticket!

This reminded me of the "old days". I had to do the same thing. I mounted my dish to a sawhorse, rolled out the wire thru my living room on game day and presto sp? a 95 mark on the reception. Like they said mark your location for the next time. I used permanent marker and the marks were still there for another year. Since then I have become permanently installed.

That would be expensive thou, you would have to have regular cable for the other days and the dish for sunday. Just go to a bar it will be alot cheaper in the long run:D At least that is what I'm telling myself this year (didn't reorder the ticket) I'm hoping to get down to see more games live, or just go to the local pub which me and some of my buddies have done for years so we get big screen privledges.

Just set the dish out when you get home and don't buy the cable.

Good system for that situation:

1- Get home set dish outside.
2- Grab brick from next to dish and place on pillow.
3- Eat, Drink and be merry!
4- Too drunk must go to bed!
5- Jump in bed hit head on brick.
6- Oh yeah! Brick is reminder to get dish.
7- Bring in dish and set the brick next to it for the next days use.

Repeat as neccessary.

You have to subscribe to a programming plan to get sports now. I think they changed that this year. All I subscribed to was football and basketball in previous years.

There is a law that says that renters can get satellite signals, but it has to be installed on your "rented" property that you have exclusive use to ie. deck. I have no exclusive deck, but a deck at my front door that anyone can get to and that is considered a public place.

I am searching for a good bar, but how many would actually be showing a Cardinal game? Probably none.

Does your back patio point North?

Don't have a back patio. Just a front porch facing West, but I do have some view to the South, which is were it is supposed to be pointing.

Can you get a clamp and attach it to your front porch? Like a beam or something? Just trying to help. If I'm asking stupid questions let me know.

I am almost positive that the FCC ruled that apartment complexes and homeowner associations are not allowed to block you from installing a home satellite system.

I had to get the approval of the condo association where I live, but they kind of admitted to me that they have to approve basically every install nowadays. The only thing that they didn't allow was having the dish installed to the roof. Yet if you were unable to get a signal any other way, then they had to allow you to do even that because of the FCC ruling.

A place that has many screens should be able to hook you up. Be persistant. You are a paying customer. Before my Direct Tv days I use to get the last TV in the corner. The life of a Cards fan. It helps when were playing a popular team. But then you have to listen to all their BS. This hassle and not being able to drink bountiful amounts of beer led to my Direct TV subscription. Actually since I pay the cheaper renewal rate it is probably still cheaper than having a bar/ food tab:D

Bratwurst is correct, the FCC has ruled that apartments and condos cannot prevent a renter/owner from hooking up to Directv/DISH as long as they hook up from from within your place of residence.

In fact, Directv used to have the FCC ruling available at their website for anyone to download and copy so that you can make it available to the condo/apartment management.

Stick to your guns and as long as you have a southern exposure and a way to hook up your dish to a railing or place on the floor of a balcony, you should be okay.

Here is a copy of what I found at Directv when I searched under FCC rulings:

You don’t have to own a house to get great satellite service! As a resident of a condo or apartment, you can set up your own DIRECTV System or your entire building could be served from just one dish.

If you want to install your own DIRECTV System, first check with your landlord or property manager for permission to install the DIRECTV satellite dish on your rooftop. If you are not able to install it on a rooftop, you may be able to install it on your private balcony or patio or in your garden, as long as the satellite dish has a clear view of the southern sky. In fact, a January 1999 FCC ruling states that apartment, condominium, town home and single family home renters can install either satellite dishes or TV antennas in these areas. Visit the FCC website for details.

If your property manager or association wants information on how to install a DIRECTV System dish for your whole complex or building, just refer them to the Communities section below or print out the information yourself and pass it on to them.

You can buy your own system from a local electronics store or from an online retailer. Have questions? Call 1-800-389-4388.

For your reference, here's a copy of the DIRECTV Customer Agreement.

More and more residents in apartments, condominiums, town homes and co-ops are enjoying the advantages of DIRECTV® service. These residents are some of the millions of customers who now enjoy DIRECTV® programming, which offers more than 225 digital-quality entertainment channels, including the best sports subscriptions and the most pay per view choices.

That's great news if you're a property owner, property manager, builder or leasing agent. You can increase occupancy and reduce rooftop and balcony clutter by providing your residents with DIRECTV® service via one dish per common rooftop. The reasons are simple. DIRECTV® service:

Keeps current residents satisfied.
Attracts new apartment residents.
Increases perceived property value.

An authorized DIRECTV Service Provider can design a signal distribution system to satisfy your needs and construct it according to your specific design requirements. Each unit wired for DIRECTV® service may also receive access to local TV broadcasts; visit our Local Channels page for more information.

For more information about how to get DIRECTV® service for your property, call

There is also a lay that ways that apartments can not say no to you installing the dishes. When I moved into one complex we told the manager we went with them because we could have the dish and the copmplex manager said by law they had to let us as long as we paid them to have the dish installed so we did not damage thier buildings. This was only 3 years ago and it was in Phoenix. I would bring it up to them just to see if they are just trying to discourage you from doing, incase they have a deal with the cable company or something like that. Of course it could be a AZ law, but check into it, it could be worth while for you.
