We're talking about practice. Not a game. Practice.
That was a quote from Philadelphia 76ers legend Allan Iverson when the media hounded him about being late for practice. But in the world of college football, practices can be just as important than some games, especially in the spring time when the team has nothing but practices.
For the Oregon Ducks and coach Dan Lanning, they'll use these upcoming practices to determine who will play where and for how long. Sometimes they get a definitive answer and sometimes it's a work in progress. But all of these practices and evaluations lead up to the annual spring game inside Autzen Stadium. According to Lanning, a lot of the faces are new, but the system isn't.
"It's similar to what we've done in the past. We'll have scrimmages the next two Saturdays, not this Saturday, but the next two Saturdays, and then our spring game and I think those are the best settings that you can evaluate where players are at," he said.
"You know, the negative of a scrimmage, we do a lot of two-spot work, so that's going to limit the amount of guys you can have on the field at the same time when you do a scrimmage. So there's a great benefit from the live reps, the work on the field, which really, really good for us to be able to take advantage of, we have to build u, our ability to go compete in a scrimmage right at this point, and just coming off a break. That's that's not really this week, right? So we're in that build phase as we go through spring, and then we'll have three opportunities to really evaluate these guys in live reps."
One of the more important evaluations going on is at the quarterback position. There's a huge hole at the spot that Dillon Gabriel left. For the first time in Lanning's tenure at Oregon, a player from within the program is expected the starting quarterback. It's assuming the quarterback spot is Dante Moore's to lose, but he still has to earn it and that's what these practices and evaluations are all about.
