Feb. 18, 2004: With the Suns in the midst of their season-longest six-game losing streak, Mike D’Antoni’s frustration level bubbled over near the end of Wednesday’s practice. In a rare outburst directed towards his players’ lack of execution in workout drills, the AWA practice court resonated with the head coach’s expressions of disapproval.
“Everybody gets frustrated,” he explained. “We’re losing and nobody likes that. We’ve just got to get their attention once in a while. It’s easy to go through the motions at this time of they year, but we’re not going to do that. We’re going to get better and we’re going to start winning some games, and we’re going to be a decent basketball team when it’s over with."
Despite his disappointment in his team’s play, D’Antoni is still pleased with their effort.
“You always want more, but I think they’re giving every night,” he said. “They never give up and we’ve got a shot to win almost every game. We don’t know how to execute down at the end of games, offensively or defensively. That’s hurting us right now and we’ve got to get over those humps. We can run, run, run, but we also have to know how to play half-court basketball, especially in crunch time. But we’ll get there.”
