Dare we trade Nash?

I think may now be the time. This team isn't getting beyond the second round of the playoffs as constituted. Nash could put a contender over the top, so he'd have serious value. Another year or so might degrade that.

Don't get me wrong, I love-love-love the guy, but there's a long tradition of letting aging veterans go to a contender and by doing so, maximizing their receding trade value. Could now be the time to strike?

Who or what specifically do you want to get for him or do you just want to trade him before he loses his value?

Yeah, there's no chance he gets traded unless:

A. He demands it.
B. We have a shot at Lebron (doubt)
C. Some other reason I cannot currently think of but would be reasonable enough to add to this discussion if it were ever thunked up. (Thunked....oh joy)

So yes, besides those reasons listed above, Nash isn't going anywhere. However it always is understandable to think to trade someone at the point where they still might get you something valuable. However, Nash is still too valuable to this team.

It all depends on the type of offense that Porter is going to run.

If he asks to be traded then yes. Unless that happens, he stays.

i agree.

and i think when nash's contract ends,
he will still sign with the Suns and accepting a huge pay cut.
just like what G. Hill did.

and i hope shaq does something like that too.

The immediate window of trading Nash has past. Seems clear this team wants to give it one more title run. Next offseason may be a different story.

Trading Nash would be an admission by the Suns that they're not really a contender. I don't think they're ready to throw away that illusion. :p

It appears we may lose Lue to the Heat, btw.

Do you have any links?

Probably an off the wall thought, but maybe the Suns FO is thinking about investing more money in getting Dragic here this season as the the better option. The last time I read about the Dragic it appeared all about the buyout of his contract and less about a legal entanglement. As I understand it, he would have to pay more to get out of his contract this season rather than wait until next season for a million dollar buyout. Maybe the Suns are thinking about giving him a larger contract to allow him to buyout his contract this season plus the $500,000 the Suns would kick-in.

Doesn't work like that. You cannot sign a player to a contract that would allow him to use that money to buy himself out. The buy out has to be completed prior to the Suns being able to sign him to a contract. That way NBA teams cannot circumvent the $500,000 kick in rule.

Couldn't they just give him a good deal (say like 2 mil per year) and he will get the difference in his contract? Yes, the buyout is done prior to the contract signing, but couldn't they just lump that money he paid in the buy out in his contract? That would be fair and would entice him even more to leave his current team.

He still has to come up with the money to complete the buyout to begin with. Your assuming the guy has enough money put away now. Even if the Suns could offset him (assuming he has the money now), I am sure the league would still consider it circumventing the rule if his contract appears out of whack by giving this guy more then his market value.

The interesting thing is though in the other thread it talks about only needing the $500,000 to get this guy now??? The initial figures were 1.5 million or something like that. This might all be easier then we thought if it's only going to cost the Suns the 500,000 and his Europe teams let's him walk. Let's hope so. That uncomplicates things.

I like my math better. :)

And whose to say that Dragic could not get a personal loan from a bank/associate now and use that money to help buyout his European contract. This would be his money to use not the NBA's money. It would not be based on what the Suns offer him as a contract.

However, I'm hoping for whoever owns his rights might settle for $500.000 after all.

Or....we could all create a Dragic Contributor fund to help get the money to bring him over here.

I know you're probably kidding, but I bet a lot of fans in most every sport would be willing to contribute to a fund that would get their team more or better players. I'm sure there must be something in the CBA to prevent this. I would even kick in some money into a fund to get Dragic here.

Yeah, I was joking in terms of the whole ASFN contributor to a Dragic contributor kind of thing. However if we could do something like collect money and give it to the Suns, which I'm not sure if we can do, then I might do something like that.

I love the freaking suns, but the day my cash goes to millionaire sarver to help him pay the bills is the day I have a tag on my toe and no control of my wallet.

Your point is well taken. However, I'm sort of talking about the fans buying a luxury item for the Suns (like a backup PG) the Suns haven't been able to afford for the past four years...

Yeah, you're right, I know the idea sucks.

I mean, I don't think I would just put money into something unless I get a little something in return. Maybe they do some sort of autograph auction off thing. But, it would be funny if they sunk that low.
