Darius Songaila our best frontcourt option?

I've seen his name mentioned before, but I think Darius Songaila may be the best frontcourt player the Suns could realistically sign. He's coming off ankle surgery that caused him to miss the end of last season, but he's a solid defensive big man with a good jumper. He made $2.2M last year and declined his player option with the Bulls. He'd be available for less than the full MLE, which might work for the Suns, assuming they actually intend to spend any of the MLE.

In 62 games last season, he averaged 9.2 pts, 4.0 rbs, 1.4 ast, 0.3 blk in 21.4 mins, on 48% fg, 82% ft.

Thoughts?

My thought is that the Suns are going to make a panic move soon

Like I said in another topic, let kurt, amare, marion, and diaw cover the points and rebounds part especially if this guy would cost 3+ freakin million.

*edit and we could take a stab at przy for shotblocking and maybe that would be worth 3 mil.

Yikes - Joel Przybilla? He wouldn't get off the bench on this team. Songaila is at least a decent offensive player, and a very good man-on-man defender. Przybilla can block shots, but that's about it. I'll take non-stiff white guy over three-inch-taller stiff white guy any day of the week.

Two years ago we could have had Przy cheap. Last year we could have had Diop cheap. They were famous flops who finally turned into something.

I would be shocked if Przy settles for less than a full MLE contract. If Ben Wallace is gone from Detroit, I'd look for them to make an immedate run at him.

His stats look good, for a good price, and for 3 million that is a ripoff because his numbers will drop, I mean he already gets only 4 boards how is that going to do with the rebounding of the 4 I mentioned. I think he might actually end up almost worthless in the system next year if amare regains his inside presence. We won't need extra inside scoring anymore.

I would rather have a big stiff filling up the extra minutes for a decent price and blocking the slashers that dallas/spurs will throw at us, but that is basically what we disagree on. You want more scoring/boards for 3 million (why?) and I wan't a shotblocker to fill in the extra minutes after seeing what zo did to dallas in the finals.

Something I noticed when looking at Elson and Songaila's stats today. They are 30 and 28 years old respectively. I wouldn't look for them to improve at all as they are both in the prime of their careers age wise. So what you see is what you get from these 2 guys, and that's bench players that are going to give you maybe 10 minutes a game with a few rebounds and maybe a couple put back points.

I don't know anyone who disagrees that Pryz would be a nice pickup at $3 million. It's just they every is convinced he's get a lot more than that.

My proposal is to give $2 million to Mourning. Pryz is going to want to go to team where he can start. Mouning won't, but in short minutes Mourning is one of the best in the league.

I brought him up in another thread. If the Suns feel they need frontcourt depth I think he'd be a good fit. He's an active mobile big man that is a good/great mid range shooter. He opted out of a contract that paid him around 2.2mil next season, if he can't get a contract he likes this year from someone and feels he could get significant pt here he may take a chance to drive up his stock like Hunter and House did.

Another ex-King I wouldn't mind if the price is right is Jason Hart. He could effectivley run an offense for stretches, but he isn't a great shooter and likely wouldn't see any time with Nash so I doubt D'Antoni would be intrested.

He's likely looking for more though may settle for MLE to sign with a contender like SA.

I don't think Alonzo mourning would take $2 million. My guess is that he's going to be looking for at least the mid-level exception for a season. For $2 million he would just say in Miami.

Alonzo mourning is nice to talk about, but realistically there's about a 0.1% chance of him coming to the Phoenix Suns.

Mourning played for the minimum last season and that's all the Heat are offering this year.

I think the value is his size and that he can back-up both forward positions. Actually, his build is almost that of a PF. He seems to be a decent player when he gets the minutes.

I'm thinking the Suns are probably not going to do a lot better and his shooting is adequate and likely to improve with more open looks.

Perhaps the Suns then might want to move James Jones. IMO, James Jones just does not have the size to bang like Jumaine Jones.

How big is Jumaine? NBA.COM lists him at 6'8" 215 and lists James Jones at 6'8" 220

ESPN lists him at 6'8" in height and 242 pounds. See link:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3350

Then the Suns send James Jones with perhaps a pick for a back-up PG/ Ball Handler and then the Suns roster is fixed for maximum versatility especially along the frontline.

Ah, yes, but Miami has the sentimental factor going for them. He's comfortable in their system (which is a much, much better fit for him by the way), and he doesn't have to move his family to play for them. Besides, it's entirely likely that they won't be able to keep him (he may just retire) for the minimum.

It's going to take a really nice offer to get him to play for another team.

don't get so hung up on statistics. besides, he gets minutes when someone gets hurt or gets into foul trouble.

If we're trying to replace Tim Thomas, why not go after another guy like him in Keith Van Horn?

Throw Van Horn a one year deal for part of the MLE and see if he bites.

Hes better than Piatkowski.

Thinking about it now, why didnt we sign Tony Kukoc for the vet Min instead of Piatkowski?

Both suck and are the same type of player, but Kukoc is still better.

Van Horn is so bad , just stay away. Everytime Van Horn played in the playoffs it was a positive for the Suns, he was that bad.
