I wouldn't mind either, but Phoenix may be too conservative a town unfortunately

(i.e. See Jason Kidd, Michael Pittman, David Boston, etc.)

For a minimum wage I actually wouldn't mind signing him. Give him a chance to contribute - DT is the weakest position on the team.
He gets cut after 4 months with the bucs....doesn't that give anyone any red flags?

By his old coach in Oakland, the only guy in the NFL who would even think about giving him another shot. Russell is history.

He's worthless. Very expensive camp fodder who seems to have a huge ego and gets distracted by women and drugs. He's a perfect example of wasted NFL talent. He and Lawence Phillips and Bobby Brown should be roommates.

He was signed in Tampa for the minimum. He could get the same thing here. Wouldn't even have to pay out a bonus. You don't think that he might have slightly more upside than that ASU undrafted rookie we signed? Really?

Sometimes a person's talent is overshadowed by that huge sack of crap they carry around with them! I suggest that Russell may be just such a person!

Gruden is not exactly a saint himself(DUI and some other stuff while a Raider coach) if he released DR that says something. Obviously they're deeper at DT than we are, but I gotta believe he either showed up totally out of shape, or something happened to convince Gruden he wasn't worth the hassle.

What's the saying no matter how good looking a woman is, somewhere there's a man who is sick of of her crap!

Buccaneers | Russell Release Update - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 13 Jul 2004 18:29:42 -0700

Updating a previous report, Jim Flynn of PewterReport.com, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers recent release of DL Darrell Russell may have been tied to his reporting to minincamps nearly 20 pounds overweight, although Buccaneers' general manager Bruce Allen would not confirm that was the sole cause. "We gave him the opportunity to succeed here and it just didn't work out for him," said Allen. "I'm not going to get into specifics, but there were certain things we wanted him to adhere to and he didn't do that."

Russ, that's the most watered down version of the saying "you show me the best looking woman in the world..." I've ever heard. But it still gets the point across.

The type of legal problems DR had in the Bay Area is troubling.

But if there is a way to bring DR in to help during camp and cut him later, it might just be worth something to the Cards.

For all of you "Bring Him In, Couldn't Hurt" types out there - Russell was released because he violated the substance abuse policy.....again! 7th time no less:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1840351

He also reported 20 pounds overweight which pissed off the coaches
who had figured he'd be grateful to get another chance.

I think he's about got himself blacklisted now.

His best friend growing up was Jelani McCoy, both of whom have been
kicked off teams for drug use, McCoy at UCLA, Russell in the NFL.

NFL | Russell Released for Positive Alcohol Test - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 15 Jul 2004 12:44:14 -0700

Updating previous reports, <A href="http://www.kffl.com/link/9">ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to release veteran DT Darrell Russell after he violated his treatment program by testing positive for alcohol last month. Russell faces another indefinite suspension by the league as this is his seventh infracation of the NFL's substance abuse policy since entering the NFL in 1997. Russell could seek reinstatement following the eighth week of the upcoming season, but the league is determining a new course of treatment for the former first-round pick.

no thanks. he needs to fix his life before he can join a team IMO.

You are right!!! But the league is also wrong in its approach handling alcoholism. It is a disase, not a sickness. It should be handled better the first time the player is detected as an alcoholic. Better treatment upfront and rewarded by playing after you go through lets say the 12 step program. That is nomatter how long it takes. Alcoholism is not a sickness but a disease, and when the powers that be fully understand this very few players will ever be helped.
