DaVanon to have season-ending ankle surgery

Major League Baseball News Wire
PHOENIX -- Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jeff DaVanon will have season-ending surgery to repair a split tendon in his left ankle.
DaVanon was injured sliding into second base against Houston on Aug. 5 and went on the 15-day disabled list with what initially was thought to be a sprained ankle. When the injury didn't improve as expected, tests revealed the tendon injury.
DaVanon went to Los Angeles on Monday for a second opinion that confirmed that surgery was necessary.
He was hitting .290 with five home runs and 35 RBIs, as primarily a backup outfielder. General manager Josh Byrnes said the injury should take three to five months to heal and DaVanon is expected to be ready for spring training.
DaVanon signed as a free agent with Arizona after appearing in 108 games each of the previous two seasons with the Los Angles Angels. He missed the 2000 season after shoulder surgery.
- Not a major loss but it still hurts. He was a quality guy off the bench who brought a good bat and energy to every game. He was a good pinch hitting option as well.... Lets hope Young can show us what he's got
