David Johnson is the key to keeping or trading Rosen

Why didn't David Johnson perform as an AllPro last year?

  • Poor coaching and offensive line

  • He's lost a step

  • Both

I'm curious, did David Johnson lose a step last year or was the coaching and O-Line just so bad that they held an AllPro to average numbers?

I ask because in my opinion, David Johnson still has the talent to be a 2,000 yard all purpose back and lead the league in TDs. I believe he was severely hampered by the coaching and line. He was returning from a wrist injury sure, but that should really only effect his fumble rate (which actually improved to .97% last year compared to 1.4% in 2016.) Yet, he put up middle of the pack numbers last season (which, is an accomplishment in and of itself given the circumstances).

So, if I'm right, then the combination of Wilks and our O-Line turned an AllPro like Johnson into an average back.

If that's the case....

How much do you think that the coaching staff's poor game planning, play calling and O-Line hampered our rookie QB? (Not to mention a lack of depth at WR?).

All this is to say that if they could turn an AllPro like Johnson into an average back, what chance did Rosen have to succeed? (And how much better will he be with an offensive mind calling the plays?) I'm in no way comfortable giving up on Rosen, who just last season was regarded as the most Pro ready QB in a much stronger QB class.

Murray may turn out to be a generational QB but I'd rather have Josh and Bosa over Murray and a 2nd or 3rd round pick because I don't think we've even scratched the surface on what Rosen can do with a real coach and something other than scrubs off the street blocking for him.

Obviously the coaching last year did not properly utilize his talents (it was crazy looking at his run chart...constantly running up the gut with minimal gain).

But I feel like coming back from injury DJ was not running “violently” like the year before the injury. It’s how I felt about Tyrann after he came back from injury...Sure he played all 16 games but he was a shadow of his former self. I felt like he and his agent made a business decision to play it safe, again I kinda felt like that was DJ last year. This team was such a mess and no where near playoff contention he probably decided to shut it down if you know what I mean.

It's 100% the O line - they couldn't block the girl scouts of america's d line (cindy, lisa and Terry - and they only rush 3)
Barry Sanders or Ezekiel Elliot couldn't run behind this line and get 800+ yards. The D line was 2 yards into the backfield immediately after the snap.
It goes back to down to the old debate....does the O line make the RB or does the RB make the O line?
IMO when the line is pathetic as AZ currently has it doesn't matter who the RB is...the D will ALWAYS win.
DJ is lucky he got paid, because no one would pay him the $ he's getting now with the results he's had.

It was scheme. Before Leftwich took over a bulk of his runs were up the gut, once Leftwitch took over they ran him to the outside and his production went up. There was a stat about it late last season and that he was getting much better production, but was still off in the passing game.

Barry dealt with plenty of that in Detroit. Their OL was crap but he is the GOAT when it comes to improvising on a broken play.

It’s crazy how DJ is projected to be the highest paid RB for 2019.

But I’ll just assume that Bell takes the top spot when he signs.

I suspect DJ's problem may have been lack of leg strength (hammy muscle). He simply wasn't breaking tackles or carrying tacklers for extra yardage. I'm not a doctor, but that's what it looked like to me.

"Please don't mention me in the same breath as Ezekiel Elliot ever again."

Sincerely,
Barry Sanders
