one small play:

3-6 with 1.55 or so to play-- DJ catches a swing pass for 14 down to the 23 yd line...... but goes out of bounds.

Stay in bounds and Minn has to burn a TO -- and with all else equal -- Minn gets the ball back well under a minute with no timeouts left ( this assumes that facing 3-18 and the Minn out of timouts, you run the ball there to keep the clock moving).

I saw that, but I'm not faulting him for that play. He wouldn't have been able to bounce it that far outside and guarantee he could stay inbounds. Basically, do you want him to stay in bounds, or do you want the 14 yards?

Yeah for a rookie 41 carries in 4 days plus catches and blocking etc not surprised just the timing was awful.

I still think in hindsight Arians should have challenged the spot on that play I think we lost a full yard with them putting the ball at teh 2 after the overturned TD.

I think they gave up about a half a yard on the spot, but a half a yard to a yard isn't worth the time out especially when you have the ball 1st down and 2 to go.

You have to expect your team to get it in there instead.

He didn't need 14. He had 9-10 on the catch and could cut back up field, gained more yards, got the first down, and stayed in bounds.

Bruce Arians: David Johnson is fine. Just a thigh bruise.

Everyone's Metabolic Conditioning is different and if you are use to carrying the workload, you might need a few extra seconds. Age is only a partial factor to that kind of recovery.

FWIR, he didn't have a cutback there, not to get a 1st down. I'm not going to crucify the guy for the play, nor will I call it a rookie mistake.

btw: i acknowledge that this is nearly nitpicking

but Ellington was blasted by his coach for doing the same thing against Balt

instead of 14, he could have had 12 yards with a slide in bounds

He had the first down immediately when he caught the ball IIRC. He could have stopped right there.

I don't know about that Russ. I called the play right away and saw just what the replay guys saw when they spotted the ball on the two. His knee was down back at the three and they gave him the length of the torso to the two. I told my son that replay would show his knee down at the three, and it did.

Not the same thing at all. Ellington willfully simply stepped out of bounds, while DJ threw his shoulder and took a ton of contact and was ridden out. Big difference in those two plays, IMO.

I agree Catfish, the spot was correct.

The rook should did all he could to stay inbounds. But he is a bright kid and will learn from this.
