By the time a team reaches Day Three there are typically no sure things. So I try not to be too hard on reaching other than to note where I had the player. This typically translates to their odds of helping. Picking low in the rounds, like the Cards did, just makes it that much tougher. That said virtually everything except for the last pick looked like a reach.

I have never seen Gunter play and I have seen very little tape. The one guy I know who saw him thought he might be a decent anchor tackle if he adds strength. He apparently does lack confidence based on his post draft comments. That said he wasn't even JJ Watt at Delaware State. This looks like a long-term project to me. No help on special teams. For what it’s worth he’s another Florida guy and played high school basketball despite his size, so his agility should be decent.

There’s been quite a bit of Riddick buzz, so I probably had him too late. I had him as my 6th round pick in my earlier post. I don’t think he would have lasted. However, that doesn't mean I didn't have his likely degree of success estimated incorrectly. I keep hearing he went to WVU and blossomed, but that's overstated. He had 7 sacks, one came against Towson. His dominant game was against Baylor, 3 sacks. I saw that game and it was a wild game with Baylor behind late. As a result there were an unusual number of sack opportunities. Still Riddick played a nice game. That also means in the other 11 games, Riddick had 3 sacks. I worry about guys who only seem to play big on a nationally televised game.

Size-wise he is very lean and got pushed around quite a bit. He’s fast, but not blazingly so. He can add technique as he seemed to rely totally on speed. He’s another one-trick pony. He was terrible the couple of time I saw him in coverage. No one I talked to liked him as anything other than a pass rusher and then there were reservations. He is unlikely to impact a game in year one.

Jamarcus Nelson is "speed kills" type of player. It seems more like kill or be killed, as it’s hard to envision a player this small surviving the NFL. He’s the lightest player invited to the combine in 13 years. He also fumbles often; 10 times in the last 2 years. Ball security is very hard to achieve with a small frame and limited strength. He only had 35 receptions his final year, but he had 48 returns. Nelson is not the polished route-runner Brown was. He will almost surely be a return specialist. It is fun to think of him and Brown both on the field at the same time. Coverage would be an issue if they let him off the line. A great deal is being presented about his speed. Keep in mind that those speed differences are only significant if he can get out cleanly and the play lasts long enough to get separation. I’m not sure if he’s a player or just a curiosity.

Gerald Christian was not a reach. He should have been gone. The offensive coaching staff was terrible at Florida (hurt Humphries as well) and he wasted those years. He looked much better at Louisville and I think he has a chance to be a good receiving tight end down the road. He likes to mix it up and can probably help on special teams. I see him as a probable practice squad player in year one, but he could be a nice find.

Harry, reference to Nelson's ten fumbles. Do you know how many were on kick returns, as opposed to when he was playing WR?

I am reluctant to fault our FO or the coaching staff thus far in their efforts to make us better. The only sure measure I know is that we were 5-11 without them and are 21-11 with them thus far. That gives me reason enough to not find fault with how they have attempted to fill our coffers.

Not to mention that it is still too early to give a complete grade for any of their drafts. This will likely be the make or break year for their first draft and it will likely hinge mostly on what Cooper does this year. If Cooper finally has his break-out year that we are all hoping for then that 2013 draft will be looking a whole lot better than it currently does.

I just received a message from a guy who said he was a UAB fan and said as far as he knows ALL of Nelson's fumbles was as a WR, and NONE as a KR. If true then the selection of Nelson, who will be playing ONLY as a KR seems like a much better pick.

Good to hear this. We really need a KR that we can depend on to make good decisions, not fumble, be a threat to break one and to know when to take a knee and not run it out.

UAB does not keep those stats, but I don't think the distinction is too meaningful. The NFL has been tinkering with the kickoff with some even calling for its elimination. This was primarily due to the ferocity of the impacts that occurred. I don't see JJ surviving many of those. As to fumbling, it is very hard to teach a player with a small build and small hands to avoid fumbling. JJ's hands measured 8.25" at the combine. Those were the smallest hands among receivers. Cooper's were 10". Of course strength is also an issue. I'm primarily saying there were safer picks for returners at that point in the draft.

I keep saying this but I would have taken Ifo Ekpre-Olomu with that pick.

The problem is that he may not play this season.

Via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ekpre-Olomu confirmed that he also suffered a dislocated knee in the process, which complicated his recovery time.

“Yeah, I think definitely teams were concerned and thinking that I wouldn’t be able to play or I wouldn’t be able to play at the level that I wanted to play,” he said. “But it really only takes one team and I’m excited to be playing for the Browns and I’m excited that they gave me the opportunity to prove [myself] and they have the faith in me that I’m going to be back to 100 percent and healthy.”

The team has expressed confidence he’ll return to pre-injury form, the only question is when. He originally thought he’d be ready to go by September, but now isn’t sure.

He didn't play in the first 4 games.

Well aware of that but even if he's out this year you get a 1st Round CB talent in Round 5 and be like getting an extra pick next year when he's fully recovered. Could use him if Bethel or Powers are not brought back in 2016.

Actually the Towson game (one-sided) was the second game of the season. He was on the active roster for the other games but couldn't crack the rotation. I don't think being unable to get himself on the field is a selling point. It is true it was a big adjustment from GW.
