Mar. 24—COLUMBUS — When Ohio State announced it would have a spring football showcase it was was speculated the Buckeyes were joining an increasing number of major college football programs which are doing away with the traditional spring game at the end of spring practice.
But Ryan Day said at a press conference on Monday that his plan is to have a spring game on April 12 as part of the spring showcase. That game would be similar to the last few years' spring games, which resembled scrimmages more than actual games.
"My plan is to have a spring game. I just think we need to have a little bit of wiggle room in case we take injuries. But we want to do this and we want to play a spring game. There may be some guys who are held from the spring game but not many," the OSU coach said.
"We're like 159 days away from Texas (in the season opener on Aug. 30). That day will matter to a lot of young players so we need to get out there and compete. The format and how it works will probably be similar to what we have done in the past.
"It will be a great opportunity for fans and folks to see our guys and get out there and play. It's important that we start the season fast and the first step is playing in the spring game. If we're down some bodies and we have to adjust we'll figure it out from there.
"We plan on playing in that spring game on April 12 and we're looking at getting a great crowd and I know we've got some great things planned that day," he said.
Day also confirmed OSU will be going to the White House on April 14 to be recognized for its national championship.
"It's an honor to be invited. It's customary. I remember growing up and watching the national championship teams go to the White House. I always looked at that like, 'Man, what an honor that would be.' It's part of the celebration of the team. I'm looking forward to getting that all planned."
