The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Jon Jay from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for two minor-league pitchers.
“We felt like where we are in the division right now, how the division is shaking out with almost all five teams sitting right on top of each other, we felt like every marginal move was going to matter,” D-backs general manager Mike Hazen said in a conference call. “It is certainly mattering right now.”
The D-backs will send left-handed pitcher Gabe Speier and right-handed pitcher Elvis Luciano to Kansas City.
Jay, 33, is hitting .307 with one home run and 18 RBI in 59 games and 266 at-bats for the Royals this season. Per spotrac, Jay makes $3 million in 2018 and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2019.
five losses from being bottom feeders of the NL West.
Yup.Right?
But how can you be a seller when you're in first place?
Sends a pretty crappy message to the fan base.
Yup.
That is what is the problem with being mediocre, and that is what the diamondbacks are at the moment.
There are just too many unknowns at this point to write the year off. If Goldy is really back and AJ and Ray come back healthy they could make a nice run.

The Diamondbacks pursued Jay when he was a free agent in the offseason, but talks ended once the club acquired Souza from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team deal in February.
Hazen said the club had been looking at adding an outfielder “for a while” after the injuries occurred, and redoubled those efforts once Souza wound up on the disabled list for a second time with a right pectoral strain.
In exchange, the Diamondbacks gave up a pair of pitching prospects, right-hander Elvis Luciano and lefty Gabe Speier. Luciano generally is viewed by scouts as having the higher ceiling, but he hasn’t pitched above rookie ball.
I like the fact that pitching has been good this year. Now if only the diamondbacks can get the offense going, there is no reason why they can't make a run.
My definition of run in this case would be busting out of this slide and going 7-3 in their next 10 games. What exactly is "a run"?
What exactly is "a run"?
This move is a (belated) result of injuries to three members of the heart of our batting order. Generalizations don't apply.xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media

Newly-acquired Diamondbacks outfielder Jon Jay will provide immediate relief to a depleted outfield.
With expected everyday players A.J. Pollock and Steven Souza Jr. missing extended time due to injury, the D-backs needed to go outside the organization to replace their production.
In the trade to acquire Jay, the D-backs parted with two minor league pitchers, Gabe Speier and Elvis Luciano.
“Jon Jay’s a really good player. He’s a winner. He’s been on winning teams, he’s been in the World Series a few times,” said D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall. “He’s a bright force in the clubhouse, he’s someone we targeted in the offseason.”
Yep we just need a chip and a chair if we can get there. The NL West is still ripe for taking - no team has been impressive. With the Dbacks pitching staff, once in the playoffs, yes, a run is possible.
It's worth the shot. Most of their best prospects in the minors are still pitchers. There are just too many unknowns at this point to write the year off. If Goldy is really back and AJ and Ray come back healthy they could make a nice run.
