Free agent reliever Greg Holland is in agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a one-year deal, league sources confirm to ESPN. Deal will be for base salary under $5 million but include performance bonuses that can juice it significantly.

Greg Holland was quietly better in the second half last season. Fastball sat around 93mph in his age-32 seasons, and while he struggled with command, he's an interesting veteran on a presumably affordable arrangement.

The guy was an expensive flop for the Cardinals last year and hasn't pitched in relief since 2014. I guess It's an OK add with Boxberger done. But it is a Jekyll/Hyde gamble. Archie Bradley take note.

Well, yeah, kinda. But that's the point. Who are you getting? A flamethrower or a flameout? Archie certainly didn't light the bullpen en fuego last year. So someone has to come in and replace Boxey McSaveblower.

Greg Holland's $3.25 million contract with the #Dbacks pays him extra $1 million if he pitches 60 games, and another $1 million if he finishes 45 games, so the maximum payout would be $5.25 million for Dbacks if he's their full-time closer the entire season.

So the Diamondbacks have their closer for the upcoming season.imo

I know he still has to win the job but I think he will eventually be named the closer.

I am basing this off the contract that they gave Holland.

You have proved my point once again. You don't know which iteration of him you are getting. It's an expensive gambit for a rent-a-player. All the while you're losing Goldy, Corbin, Pollack, prolly Greinke, et alia. But let's hope he can save some of the 75 games this team will win in 2019.

It's NOT an expensive gamble. $5.5 million total isn't that much for a closer. If he closes (and saves) 40+ games and makes 60+ appearances that means the Dbacks are winning games.

And if he is good, but the Dbacks are bad, they can trade him to a contender mid-season.
