Dan Hayes of The Athletic downplays the possibility of a Goldschmidt pursuit for Minnesota (Twitter link); Hayes notes that the Twins did make some form of inquiry but adds that this “doesn’t appear to be a path the Twins will go down.” The fit is obvious, but Arizona’s asking price on the perennial MVP candidate will be quite high, and he’s a free agent after the 2019 season.

One evaluator estimated the Diamondbacks' return for Goldschmidt would be more than what the Pirates got for Andrew McCutchen last winter from the Giants -- outfielder Bryan Reynolds, pitcher Kyle Crick and international slot bonus dollars -- but less than what the Orioles got for Manny Machado in Baltimore's midseason deal with the Dodgers last summer. Baltimore received five minor leaguers from L.A., the most notable being outfield prospect Yusniel Diaz.

Supposedly NYY offered Justus Sheffield for Goldy before sending him to SEA according to Buster Olney.

If that's true, they better net a better return if they trade Goldy. Sheffield would have been a nice building block for the future as a Robbie Ray/Patrick Corbin type.

What guys like Rosenthal and Law are saying is Goldy should at the most net 2 Top 100 prospects in the #25 - #100 range, Sheffield was #31 so it should be interesting. Rumors today are ARZ is intent on dealing him. I read rumors that some teams may be willing to deal for him and Greinke as a package, teams like HOU and STL for example. A couple of trade scenarios I saw were: Goldy & Greinke to STL for Jose Martinez, Luke Weaver & Dakota Hudson and to HOU for Cionel Perez, Corbin Martin & AJ Reed.

This whole thing just stinks. Why are only four or five teams allowed to compete and collect good players in this system?
We aren't even signing any good players and we're dumping all our home grown players because a contract or two is coming up.
THIS IS A FIRST PLACE TEAM!! Damn this.
Bye Corbin. Bye Goldschmidt. Bye Greinke. Bye, competitiveness. That's only for coastal teams, I guess.

If we trade Goldy for lesser value just to dump Greinke's contract...

Problem is a team like ARZ needs to consistently draft well to keep their farm stocked to replace players they can afford long term and until last couple of years they haven't. OAK has done a good job of remaining competitive despite having one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. ARZ took a huge gamble being buyers at deadline and it didn't pay off, granted Corbin & Pollock may not have brought much in trades and comp picks actually may be better as you can probably get better talent in Comp A rounds than a team's 4 or fifth best prospect if they could have even gotten that.

Been asked the Goldy-Greinke question a few times. I highly doubt that they get packaged. Few teams would need/want both and they can probably negotiate better returns/financials individually.

From Rotoworld:

Paul Goldschmidt - 1B - Diamondbacks
Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports that the Phillies talked to the Diamondbacks about Paul Goldschmidt.

Yes, the Phillies seem to be in the middle of everything. Stark hears that the two sides discussed a deal that would have included right-hander Zach Eflin and several young players, but talks broke down when the Phillies tried to include Carlos Santana. It's unclear if talks could be revived down the road. Most expect the Phillies will try to move Rhys Hoskins back to first base, hence the trade rumors with Santana, but they'd obviously make an exception to make room for someone like Goldschmidt. Again, if anything this shows that the Phillies are willing to look everywhere and anywhere right now.

If the Diamondbacks even consider trading Goldy for a package centered around Zach Eflin (who isn't even one of the Phillies' Top 10 prospects), Mike Hazen needs to be canned immediately.

I would be asking for Sixto Sanchez or Adonis Medina and Adam Haseley otherwise move on.

Burns and Gambo just confirmed it. If the Phillies don't make us take on Santana's contract, the D-Backs are prepared to dump Goldy for a B-level prospect in Eflin and a handful of C-level prospects. Hazen needs to be jettisoned ASAP.

And they turned down Sheffield?

For that barrel of crap, I'd rather keep Goldy and at worst get a comp pick.

The Sheffield report hasn't been confirmed or debunked locally yet.

Still, I concur on the Phillies' craptastic offer, and I think Hazen needs to get the axe before he does irreparable damage to the franchise.

That's better than a package featuring Eflin, who isn't even close to sniffing the Top 100...

Moreover, while Rosenthal hints at the Cardinals’ intentions to attempt an extension if such a deal went down, keeping Goldschmidt for just the one year at $14.5M would work just as well. The Cardinals are losing several key players after 2019 and several more after 2020. Going for it with this “core” one last time in 2019 before starting over soon thereafter is a pretty darn good strategy.

I think HOU or STL are most likely destinations. The thing is all teams are throwing low ball offers trying to get ARZ to bite because now they sense Hazen's desperation. If I were Hazen to re-gain leverage, I would wait until Harper and Machado sign. Then the losers of those sweepstakes will become desperate as there will be no more impact bats with trades as only options.

From Houston, I want at least one of Yordan Alvarez or Josh James and at least one of Cionel Perez and Bukauskas.

From the Cardinals, Hudson is okay, but I would prefer Alex Reyes. Knizer is an interesting piece, given our lack of catching prospects.

From the Phillies, I would at least want one of Adonis Medina or Alec Bohm and at least one of JoJo Romero, Ranger Suarez or Enyel De Los Santos.
