Asked about the report that Dbacks plan to make him offer to be their next GM, Dave Stewart said, "I hope they do.

I really hope LaRussa knows what he is doing because from an outside perspective there is not a much to go on here. He very briefly was the assistant GM of a bad Toronto team, was very briefly a pitching coach on a couple teams, then started a business as a sports agent.

I remember Dave Stewart as a tough Pitcher. But I agree with your concern.

Especially since, as a sports agent, his latest experience has been representing players, not overseeing them.

I am concerned why he was briefly an Assistant GM and briefly a Pitching Coach? And he's now ready to jump from Labor to Upper Management.

The odds are his tenure might be brief again. That is not the way to build a winner.

What is LaRussa thinking? Is his priority recruiting people only with whom he has worked before?

The D-backs are sounding like a train wreck with no hope for the near future.

Gibson's relationship with La Russa helps his chances of return to Diamondbacks.

I swear to you that my comments in my preceding post after I got home from work, "What is LaRussa thinking? Is his priority recruiting people only with whom he has worked before?", came before reading this article in the AzRepublic and azcentral.com.

It describes how Gibson is almost a lock to continue as Manager, despite his weaknesses in communicating with people and unhappy ballplayers who roll their eyes every times he makes a new move.

Read the article. It covers it better than I could have.

Worst of all, it sounds like the fans and players are stuck with La Russa's buddy Gibson. Damnit!!!

I can't say there is no hope for the future and that Stewart will be terrible, but I agree that I wish there was SOMETHING more definitive to say about him than "He and LaRussa have been close for 20 years".

Hopefully he is great, but I certainly don't feel as good about this (probable) hire as I did about Ryan McDonough.

I'd really like to hear him emphasis analytics. If he comes out in his opening press conference and spits on them the way our last regime did then my expectations will be really low.

Deal will get done on Friday and De Jon Watson is leaning towards joining the Dbacks as assistant GM.

Terry Steinbach could be the next manager.

Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer press speculates that if the D’Backs hire Dave Stewart as their GM — which appears to be a near-certainty – and look outside the organization for a new manager, Twins bench coach Terry Steinbach would be a logical candidate (Twitter link). As Berardino notes, the 52-year-old Steinbach has a longstanding relationship with both Stewart and D’Backs chief baseball officer Tony La Russa. Steinbach, a three-time All-Star as a player, was Stewart’s catcher in the late 80s and early 90s on an A’s team that was, of course, managed by La Russa.

I would favor this. LaRussa, Watson and Stewart each could bring an element that would benefit the team long term.

LaRussa would set the system. Watson would be in charge of finding the talent for the long term and Stewart the monetary issues. While Stewart may be the GM by name, I think they are shooting high with their plans.

the suns and the cardinals have seemingly blown it out of the water with their GM choices, all I ask is that the DBacks do the same. I have to remind myself that bad hirings still do happen though...

I can't wait until the offseason to see their vision

Heads up folks, this won't be a quick turnaround
