Is it me or does it still boggle the mind that we are starting this series 9.5 games behind the Expos?

It's not you.

You must be mistaken - "Mr. Colangelo" and his minions said there wouldn't be a Marlins-style collapse after winning the WS.

(I notice that the media has conveniently forgotten to hold him accountable for that, preferring instead to write about how their darling Jerry has been so "mistreated".)

I am not sure I would classify this on the same level as the Marlins deal. I mean, I don't think the Dbacks sold off the entire franchise like FLA did before the champagne was even mopped up. They held the team together really as long as they could and when it was finally apparent this season was crap, they made some moves (like I think they should have) and hopefully helped this team down the road.

We are, no question about it, the worst team in baseball.

Tomorrow we face John Patterson. We just shipped Choate, for whom we wisely traded Patterson, to Tucson (poor Sidewinders! What total dreck we have dumped on them.) Oh yeah, we HAD to trade him - we needed to keep a roster spot for Shane Reynolds. No, I mean Casey Daigle... uhh... Bobby Estalella - or ummmm, Donny Sadler. No, no, Villafuerte! Or maybe Baerga. Or maybe Colbrunn. Ad Nauseum. :barf:

If Patterson gets the W tomorrow, GM JoeBlows should do the right thing: admit his shame publically, and commit Hari Kiri on the BOB Plaza.

What a bad joke!

Another difference between the Dbacks and the MArlins is that the Dbacks were a pretty old team when they won. They kept it together the next year winning their division but age seemed to become even more of a factor.

The recent fall is partly due to cost cutting but has much more to do with incompetence.

The Schilling trade was horrible. Fossum is a joke.

The Sexson trade was misguided. It was based on a delusion that the Dbacks could still be competitive.

And here's the big question....

How many star players are playing in the bigs that were drafted after 1998?

How many of them were drafted by the Dbacks?

Thats a very misleading statement. It takes several years before you can judge draft classes. Webb was from 2000. Hairston and Tracy from 2001. These guys are just getting in the league, so there are very few draft classes that we can really make a statement about. However, very early indications of the 2003 draft appear to be very good indeed.

I wish we would have had a Marlins-esque firesale after 2001 instead of trying to continue winning with a rapidly aging team. Notice the Marlins firesale landed them another WS in 2003, something we won't see for awhile because of Jerry's stubborness to break up the 2001 team. That's what he should be held accountable for, not having any sort of legit long-term vision for the team.

Although, might i add that they did win their first in 1997. They had to wait 6 years to win another title. We are only 3 years separated, we "could" still rebuild in another 3 years and match them without the firesale...

Sorry to burst your bubble but rebuilding takes more than three years unless you're blessed with an outstanding front office which the DBacks did not have. We don't know yet what Moorad is capable of but we're looking at an entire organizational overhaul as Moorad implements his Jamesian system to the team. Who knows how long this could take?

Anybody besides me enjoying watching John Patterson shut us down, as Webby implodes? :p Is there a lower, more sadistically ironic depth we can yet sink to?

I don't see how anyone can blame the investors for dumping JC and his decision-making apparatus - look what this team has become through a cascade of bumbling, short-sighted, statistically ignorant decisions! Trying to keep this aging team alive with duct tape and baling wire after 2001 was sheer folly, and the stat-oriented among us (which I was not at the time :notworthy ) knew it. A well-executed trade-vet-for-prospect sell-off would have been much wiser.

Short-term high-cost WS win - absolutely no regrets at all. But almost every decision since then - :barf:

If it drives us nuts, imagine how you'd feel if you had a hundred million bucks riding on JC and JoeBlows' decisions. Amazing it was a bloodless coup!!
