The Diamondbacks are a confusing team, sometimes even for the guy who put them together.

Sixty-nine games into the season, General Manager Kevin Towers still is trying to get a read on what kind of team he assembled. His club sitting a game under .500, he's trying to determine what they might need, if anything, as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

"I still feel deep down inside that this is a better club than we had last year," Towers said. "I still believe in them. I look at it, I look at the depth, I look at the pitching, the experience of last year, and it's just kind of waiting for it to happen. I think it's going to happen.

"It's why I'm being kind of cautious here until we get up to the deadline to have a better read of what to do."

At this point, Towers isn't a buyer or a seller. Instead, he's in neutral, a position he's not used to being in this deep into a season.

D-Backs have several offers they're sitting on and will probably let pass. Teams calling right now are assuming D-Backs are sellers, but it's not the case. The feeling in the FO right now is "ride it out." There was brief talk that Brett Lawrie could be had because he's kind of a difficult person in the locker room, but the Blue Jays are actually buyers this year. The D-Backs are looking at 3B, but the guys being offered don't substantially upgrade the position. Matt Davidson has shown improvement as an everyday 3B in Mobile, but he's still at .928 FPCT and may, in fact, be a player used to acquire a MLB 3B.
