The Diamondbacks are a confusing team, sometimes even for the guy who put them together.
Sixty-nine games into the season, General Manager Kevin Towers still is trying to get a read on what kind of team he assembled. His club sitting a game under .500, he's trying to determine what they might need, if anything, as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.
"I still feel deep down inside that this is a better club than we had last year," Towers said. "I still believe in them. I look at it, I look at the depth, I look at the pitching, the experience of last year, and it's just kind of waiting for it to happen. I think it's going to happen.
"It's why I'm being kind of cautious here until we get up to the deadline to have a better read of what to do."
At this point, Towers isn't a buyer or a seller. Instead, he's in neutral, a position he's not used to being in this deep into a season.
