Smart move. Without a solid candidate for 3B (now that Didi won't be bumping Hill off 2B, as long as he is still with us), it should give even more confidence to David Peralta, who earned a corner position in a crowded outfield.

And, as long as he can field OK at 3B, playing there should take some hitting pressure off Tomas vs. being a corner outfielder.

My boy Chip Hale has made a commitment for Spring Training. As I just wrote in another post, when did Gibson ever make, or stick with, a commitment (except for Goldy)?

Just finished reading an in-depth article about him. In the writers opinion Tomas is a sub-par defender in the outfield and a disaster at 3rd. We shall see I guess. Right now I look at Chip Hale the way I look at all new coaching hires: I trust them until they give me a reason not to trust them.

that's been the word since before we ever signed him. you need a good glove at 3rd. you can't hide a poor defender there

It's official

SAN DIEGO -- Yasmany Tomas is officially a member of the D-backs.

The 24-year-old slugger, who signed his six-year, $68.5 million deal with Arizona on Sunday, celebrated the monumental day like most young men his age: He fired up his X-Box video gaming system and played FIFA 15 for a few hours. Tomas then put down the controller and resumed his training in the Dominican Republic.

There is always risk & uncertainty when dealing with talent from outside the U.S. Heck, there is risk & uncertainty whenever teams are making any deals.
I read that the Phillies were all over Tomas, but, due to internal snafu's they got beat to the punch by the Dbacks.
Given the comparative low cost involved here, this can only be viewed as a very smart, calculated and well-crafted move by the Dbacks.
We'll just have to wait and see if Tomas is able to produce at the major league level.

Triple ah-hem ;)

At the time, I didn't think it was such a terrible move. That said, when can he opt out of the deal? this season? Next season?

2019. But why would he, we're paying him $33mil over the next two seasons after he has the opportunity to opt out. I'd have to think that's considerably more than he could get anywhere else.
