Per Gambo-

David Wells has cleared waivers and with the Red Sox done, they are shopping him. Gambo says he talked to people within the Dbacks and they said they have interest (Byrnes came from Boston and is very familiar with Wells) . Other teams interested are the Cardinals, Twins, Oakland, Dodgers, Reds, Padres..... Says it will only take a mid-level prospect.

Not sure what any of you think of this possible trade but I don't want any part of it. He screwed us a couple years ago and he's completely washed up. We don't need his fat @#$ or his horrible attitude here. I don't see how he can push us into the playoffs. IMO, Cruz would be a better addition to the rotation than Wells

Red Sox shopping Wells for possible trade
By Buster Olney
ESPN The Magazine

The Boston Red Sox are actively shopping veteran pitcher David Wells to determine what they could get if they decide to trade the lefty in the next 48 hours.

Wells, 43, cleared waivers on Aug. 3, at a time when he was just starting to come back from a serious knee problem; on July 31, he allowed 8 runs in 4 2/3 innings. Because he cleared waivers, he can be traded to any team without restriction, and Wells has pitched much better of late. He has 2.65 ERA in the month of August, walking 5 and striking out 20 in 34 innings.

The notion that the Red Sox might consider trading Wells would've seem ludicrous two weeks ago, but Boston is in freefall and has dropped 6 games behind the Twins in the wild-card race, and 7 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. Wells has talked about retiring at the end of this season, so if the Red Sox keep Wells through the month of September and don't make the playoffs, they would effectively lose him for nothing.

And he has high value right now, at a time when the likes of Shawn Chacon and Ramon Ortiz are the only pitchers who typically get through waivers. Wells' exceptional postseason history has to intrigue teams: In 16 postseason series, he has a 10-4 record, with a 3.15 ERA. In order to be eligible for post-season play with another team, Wells would have to be traded by Aug. 31.

In the end, The Red Sox may decide to keep Wells. But their recent conversations with other teams have been aimed at laying the groundwork for a possible deal if they decide to move the left-hander.
Among the contending teams that make sense as possible suitors for Wells would include the Mets, Twins, Diamondbacks, Padres, Dodgers, Phillies, Cardinals, A's and the Reds.

He's a free agent at the end of the year so its not a terrible idea, but I sure wouldn't give up anything of value for him. Since it appears a couple teams are interested, it will still probably cost more in a trade than what the Dbacks would be willing to give up.

Isn't he the guy who screwed us the last time he was trying to pick a home? If so, no thanks...
He supposedly backed out of a handshake deal with Jerry back before the 2002 season.

Trade for him or not, it won't make a difference what pitcher we bring in here unless we start scoring some runs. Period.

Gambo said that the Red Sox would have traded Wells to the Dbacks in exchange for one of two players: Miguel Montero or Carlos Gonzalez. Good thing the Dbacks didn't do it.

I can not believe the Padres gave up thier #2 prospect for Wells. I was in Cali when the trade rumors started to heat up and every Padre fan was super angry about this trade, a #2 pospect for 5 starts from a 40something pitcher who gets hurt a lot.

The Padres farm system is already terrible, to give up one of the few quality guys you actually have for a few months of an over the hill and injury riddled David Wells is a horrible trade. Towers must be desperate.

I’m glad we’re not trading away our prospects anymore. For me personally, it is much more fun to watch the D’Backs when we have guys playing that have worked up through the system. It’s nice to acquire a free agent, but nothing matches the thrill of watching a player that has worked their way up through the system.
