:championship:

anyone else completely underwhelmed by our offseason moves? I'm glad we did some work to shore up the bullpen, but other than that, there is nothing to get excited about. In addition, we cut a ton of money by getting rid of Webb, Haren, Reynolds, etc., and seem to still be sitting on the majority of it.

Hopefully Towers is the genius everyone is giving him credit for.

The D'Backs have agreed to sign Willie Bloomquist to a one-year, $1.05MM deal, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). Agent Scott Boras negotiated the deal, which includes a mutual option for 2012.
The good news is that Willie has played every position except Pitcher and Catcher (including 20 games as DH) during his 9-year career.

The bad news is that he has averaged:

BAVG .246
OBP .317
SLG % .336
HR 1.4
RBI 16
RUNS 30
SB 11

It looks like we have a pinch-hitting bunter and baserunner.

With mediocrity at 1B, LF and starting pitching, our 25-man roster seems to have taken quite a tumble.

The D'backs must have read the Suns and Cardinals handbooks on how to field weak rosters with missing ingredients.

'Looks like the Phoenix Coyotes and Mercury are our only major league teams with a chance to succeed this year.

Edit: 'Sorry, I forgot to include the mediocrity at 3B as well.

Dang. I only saw "Dbacks to sign Willie ..." I was hoping it would be Randolph.

Oh well.

Once again, this signing really doesn't mean much. He will not be starting except to give a guy a day off. He will be lucky to get 200 ABs so who really cares?

Scoring runs on our team was not an issue and it won't be even with LaRoche and Reynolds gone. Our problem was pitching. We obviously addressed the relief aspect and the starting will obviously be a little worse starting off because Haren is gone, but the potential we have could make it better top to bottom.

As for the question about our payroll it will be just about the same because Upton is getting nearly $4 million more this year, plus Drew and Montero are arbitration eligible. Add in Duke who is about $4 million and Putz who is $5 million. Payroll won't change until we finish paying off the deferred contracts which should happen in a few years.

Perhaps the runners on base during those 200 at-bats, or the players in the on-deck circle. Or the fans, paying for cable TV or tickets to watch the games and root for their home team.

Three weak hitters @ 400 AB's apiece, plus Bloomquist's 200 = 1,400 at-bats.

I care!

Seriously, going with weak hitters as a reaction to all those strikeouts last season is just lazy management. Out with old, in with the opposite.

As with most things in life, the answer is not either extreme. It's providing balance and that takes a Front Office with intelligence, experience and hard work.

Just look at the Suns. Inept Front Office = no balance = a declining fan base.

Towers is known for building teams that can contend on a minimum budget. How about we give him at least one game before we bitch and complain about him moves?

We may not be the most talented, but we will be the most versatile. Blum, Mora, Bloomquist & Nady can play multiple positions but they won't really help us win games.

At this point they should really just bite the bullet for a season or two and do their best to pay down the deferred contracts, because I can't imagine attendance being any worse last year for a middling budget. Just go all youth. At least people might come to watch effort and hustle.

Of course, I'm not an Upton fan. I think he's part of the cancer problem on this team, but I'm pretty sure I'm a very small minority so I doubt many here share my interest in trading him.

I thought that was done after this season. I heard that they paid a lot of if off in advance the last three seasons and this was the last of like 95% of it.

Q: Where do you stand in paying off deferred salaries?

A: The bad news is we still owe money, but the good news is we've taken the amount that was on the books when our group came on board in 2004 - $200 million-plus that was owed - and it's down to about $40 million remaining. This year and two more years will take us down below $5 million. Through the 2012 season, we'll still have significant payments to make. But after that season, that really won't be an issue. We haven't taken on deferred money through those years. We've basically been paying players who are no longer with us.

From last April. Looks like it is after the 2012 season is will be mostly paid off.
