Right-hander Zac Gallen is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Miami Marlins for shortstop prospect Jazz Chisholm, source tells ESPN. Gallen has been very good, with a 2.72 ERA in seven major league starts.

Not necessarily. Getting a starting pitcher doesn't mean we have to get rid of one.

Unless we make a killing in a deal.

Gallen was traded from the Marlins to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday for Jazz Chisholm, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

This deal came out of nowhere, with the Marlins dealing from their underrated starting pitching depth for a high-upside shortstop prospect. Gallen gets a downgrade in his home ballpark, and will now have to pitch in Coors Field and against the Dodgers more than he would have with Miami. However, at least he stays in the National League and is on a more competitive ball club. Gallen has a 2.72 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 43 strikeouts in 36.1 innings (seven starts) in the big leagues.

BTW - I like this deal. Ahmed is our SS for years to come. Grabbing another arm, a solid one at that, is never a bad thing!

So automatically we must dump him. Surest path to a championship is to get rid of any player worthy of a major league contract.

No he isn't. He is under contract for 2 years then he is gone. We won't be paying him. It is an awful deal.

You traded a guy with a ceiling of an All Star for a guy with a ceiling of a #3 starter because of need.

The Dbacks love to give away their top SS prospects for mediocre pitching

So when we trade a player his ceiling is all star but the guy we get is a 3rd starter. Even though hes a top prospect also? Cmon man

It's not speculation it is factual that Ahmed's contract is up.

It is known that Ahmed wants to be paid and will be paid as a decent hitting Gold Glove SS. You had someone likely even better that would be ready at that exact same time.

That is how farm systems work.

You keep your top prospects and work them up your system to replace expensive free agents rather than trading them for guys who aren't even top 100 prospects because they can fill a need today

He is not a top prospect. He isn't in the top 100. You are confusing top prospect in an organization for an actual top prospect in the MLB.

We have better SS Prospects in the system. Chisholm regressed this year.

He is still + Defense + Arm + Power at SS despite his high K rate right now.

You don't sell off your top prospect for mediocre trash because of 3 down months in his journey. It is asinine

Gallen is a beast right now....against mlb batters. He was what ? 9-1 in triple a? Let the kid pitch some before you kill him.
