Surprisingly nice start for the DBACKS. McCarthy looking good so far. The umpire looked like he missed the third strike call, or giants wouldn't have got their first run. :)

Same umpire had egg on his face with the missed call at home plate (later changed). I think it might make ESPN :-D.

Go DBACKS!

That out call at home was pretty funny. He really made a show of punching the runner out... as the ball is sitting on the group 6 feet from the play. He quickly realized his mistake, but is that play reviewable?

Oh dear... this game looked like a laugher a few minutes ago. Not quite as funny at the moment.

Perez is getting lit up.

If we are going to score, this should be the inning with the middle of the line up due up.

The bullpen blows it, what else is new? Maybe Towers can trade Bradley for a setup guy.

I thought this game was in the bag.

Stuck with McCarthy too long, the pen looks very shaky. Trumbo seems to be using a much more compact swing than he did last year, hopefully he sticks with it. I think we are going to really regret keeping Pollack over Eaton. AJ is a better fielder but Eaton IMO has much more upside and clearly has a better eye at the plate. AJ should not be hitting leadoff, he is simply a poor hitter.

With our pitching staff I think we might be in for a lot of games like this. Offense can certainly put some runs on the board, but our pitching staff looks even worse than previously feared.

That was the story of this game.

TWICE McCarthy threw strike 3 to close out an inning, TWICE it wasn't called, and both times the very next pitch resulted in a run. The second time, it should have ended the 7th inning, instead the Giants scored 4.

Side note: Oliver Perez looked horrible.

Miggy looks great.

Trumbo had a good game, but he swung at three straight breaking balls down and away. I hope he learns to lay off that or it will become the book on him ala Chris Young (low and away, couldn't hit it, couldn't lay off it) or Mark Reynolds (high and away, couldn't hit it, couldn't lay off it).

Chris Owings looked great.

A.J. looks awful. SOOOO indecisive. Checked swing after checked swing.

Anyway, looking forward to Miley tomorrow night.

I really don't see a light at the end of the tunnel for this year's team.

We are 0-3 at home this season

Don't forget that the two games in Australia count as home games for the Diamondbacks. We are officially 0-3 at home this season. What a horrible start to the season!

Not when he dropped out #3 and cost the team 2 runs. Didi makes that play easy.

I few thoughts:

1- Reed should be fine. Just know who your facing in the 9th with the game on the line. Don't just throw one over the plate to that hitter! He's an MVP for a reason. Make him hit one off the fringes. Welcome to the wild wild West!

2- Pollock is not a lead off hitter. Way too easy to strike out. He's out there for his glove.

3- McCarthy needed to finish the 7th. I get that the tying run (Pagan) was coming up to the plate. But he did not look tired to me. He still had good stuff.
Gibson needs to give his starters the chance to finish what they start, NOT panic in that situation. So he lost his last man he faced, give him one more opportunity to make it right. Then if he dosen't get the next out pull him. McCarthy was rightfully not pleased with the decision.

4- For what it's worth Owings will be good enough a SS. He made some tough plays out there, particularly one that just got by Prado and he made a real good pickup in the hole and throw to 1st on. He'll definitely add to the offense ALOT more.

Gibson should switch him with Parra in the lineup. At least until he starts hitting consistently.

You're right. Chris Owings did not look good.

3-5 against the Giants ace, including sending 2 right back up the middle (BTW- a ball can't be timed up any better than that). He made the two plays that BB mentioned but he missed on the check swing blooper that Didi MIGHT have made (while going 0-5).

Great observation that Owings didn't look great.

I'm OK with the choice but that's what you get with an "offensive" SS. Up until about 15 years ago teams always went with the better fielder. Lots of championships have been won with SS that usually batted in the 8 hole. A short stop that can save a run a game with his glove is worth more than one that might drive in 85 runs and not make the same plays.

Hopefully Owings will develop into a guy that can do both.

Wait, which SS is the next Jeter again? :)

I did not get the hate Eaton got here. IMO he has the makings of a legit leadoff hitter. He is patient, he has a good eye, even when he is not getting hits he made the pitcher show some of his goods. Eaton saw 18 pitches in 4 at bats last night and got two hits. AJ was dreadful, 0-6 with a golden sombrero, he only worked the count to the extent of his many strikeouts. I like AJ but he seems like a 4th outfielder to me and certainly not someone you'd want batting in the top half of your order.
