I'm OK with the choice but that's what you get with an "offensive" SS. Up until about 15 years ago teams always went with the better fielder. Lots of championships have been won with SS that usually batted in the 8 hole. A short stop that can save a run a game with his glove is worth more than one that might drive in 85 runs and not make the same plays.

Hopefully Owings will develop into a guy that can do both.

Just for discussion sake (i.e. no right or wrong answer) what would you have called Tony Womack? I don't recall how he was with the glove. I just remember no Tony Womack = no W.S. win.

Womack came up huge in the 9th of game 7 but he certainly had been a punching bag going into the playoffs (he also had a huge hit in the deciding game vs the Cards in the wildcard round). I remember his lousy at bats had led to so much irritation that when he hit that double off Rivera I screamed out "Womack I will never mock you again!". He holds a special place in my heart for that.

But statistically he was not what you'd want in a lead off hitter. Yes, he caused havoc on the base paths (I would think he is probably our franchise leader in steals), but his OBP was barely over .300. You gotta get on more often than that as a lead off guy, and when you consider that he was putting up those low offensive numbers at a time when the league was in the height of the juice era, they seem even weaker.

However, he did do this:

So, praise be to Womack, I love that guy!

Tony Womack was a poor fielding and poor hitting SS. That's why he played mostly 2B and LF before his move to SS.

And, man, did he like to swing for the fences for his 3 home runs per year.

A leadoff hitter who constantly popped up the ball.

That is why Craig Counsell replaced him at leadoff. Craig was one of those rare players who made the rest of the lineup better.

Womack at leadoff did not.

Ahahahahaha, that was a funny sequence. Bochy wastes his challenge on a pickoff attempt and not even two minutes later the umpire blows a serious call that gives us a run and poor Bruce can do nothing but cry about it.

Montero has 3 BB in 4 PA on 14 total pitches batting in front of 0-4 w/ 2 GIDP Trumbo? This is why I struggle with the idea of protection. Either it's not real, Trumbo isn't a protector, or somebody didn't tell the Giants he was one.

I only caught the very tail end (last few pitches) of game 2. Chase looked like a ghost town. Was it like that the whole game, or did people just leave early? I don't know if I've ever seen it so empty.

Womack was a SS? I don't remember him at SS at all.

He played SS more than any other position while he was here. Right field was usually covered by Dellucci, Sanders or Bautista, second by Bell, Spivey or Counsell (who filled in for Tony at short also).

2nd game so everyone on a half season plan like me wasn't there.

Statistically protection is a myth in baseball.

That being said, Trumbo's leads the team with 6 RBIs, is hitting .278 so far, . If protection is real, then he is protection.

It took you this long to figure that out?

BTW, you can put your kid back as your avatar now if you want.

I watched every Dback game for years and years. Probably saw most of Womack's games. Thought he was 2b. :doi

Thanks!

He not only pitched with authority in his second appearance, he looked it.

Let's overlook his bad HR pitch the day before.

Which was also the case for Miley. Aside from one mistake pitch -- a 3-run homer in the 1st -- he was totally in control and pitched the balance of seven strong innings.

Not a bad start for Chubs Cahill. If not for us having a track athlete in center instead of a baseball player he would be at one earned run in 6 innings.

Of course Cahill gives us a good outing and our offense is no where to be found. Team is frustrating. I am predicting we finish 8 games below .500 this year.

The perils of quoting avg 4 games into the season it seems.

Protection is statistically a myth, but those who argue for it's existence do so in a mental aspect of the opposing pitcher, not on a cumulative one regarding the stats of the protective player. So Trumbo's current RBI and avg aren't as material as the way the player in front of him is pitched to IMO.

We are so lucky that Towers' specialty is putting a bullpen together.

Went to the game last night. What a waste of money. No excitement with this team. Today (Thursday) the bullpen once again collapses. Where does Towers get these losers?
