I don't want to be the prognosticater of bad news but Jorge Julio is fat and he sucks..... but he can be a short term answer while Lyon and Valverde come out of their respective funks. Valverde would be better served as an 8th inning setup guy long term IMO

I'm not giving up on Valverde yet, but obviously he needs to removed as the closer until he works things out.

Eight runs in his past four appearances (two each inning); nine runs in his past five. Two blown saves in a row.

He tried a new set-position windup on Memorial Day, bringing his hands high over his head (like the oldtimers did). A new approach isn't going to work instantaneously. But you certainly don't experiment while other members of the bullpen have closing experience.

When a reliever is overpowering, he can groove an 0-2 pitch, hoping to blow it by the batter. When he's not doing well, you waste an 0-2 or 1-2 pitch, hoping the batter will chase it.

When I saw him challenge the batter with a fastball down the middle on an 0-2 count on Monday, I thought, the manager and his pitching coach are not doing their job.

Yikes. 2 in row is no fun.

Since we don't have a bonafide lights-out closer I have no problem just riding the hot hand since we have 3 guys who have all closed out games before.

Valverde obviously has a frigid hand right now so give him some time off. Let Julio take the next save situation and if he succeeds, run him out there again.

We pulled Ortiz from the rotation when he wasn't getting the job done and the team went on a nice run after it. It looks like it's time to at least temporarily adjust the bullpen rotation.

Beat the Mets.

Mets recall one of the best prospects in baseball, Lastings Millege, after Xavier Nady had an emergency appendectomy. Millege was the player Byrnes was supposedly trying to get if we would have traded Vazquez to them. Wonder if he'll get any starts against us?

Batista goes tonight. Thank God for TIVO. Suns and D'baks overlap again.

Don't worry guys, Valverde won't pitch tonight whether it's a save situation or not. He;s pitched 3 games in a row so he will take tonight off no matter what. We will have to see how this situation is handled another night...

Major props to Miggy! Looks like he's gonna go complete game only giving up 1 run. Excellent pitching and way to keep our struggling bullpen of the field! Byrnes with another homer today... Way to go Pig Pen!

Batista gets major props for keeping the bullpen off the field. The hitting is on fire and they will need them to stay hot against Pedro tomorrow.

I think that's the best strategy for our closer situation: complete games and 5-run wins the rest of the way out.

Great job by the Poet!

Webb goes 7 shutout innings tonight, this guy is unbelievable. The bad news is that Martinez has been just as good, currently pitching in the 8th in a 0-0 game.

Extra innings as Lyon's looked in control in the 9th. Maybe he read my thread on this board?:D Many people like a lot of offense but I enjoy this type of game any day.

I hate the bleeping Mets. Why did Melvin pitch to Chavez? I would of walked him to set up the double play.

Pedro was on, Webby was on. A classic pitchers duel- what fun to watch. There were some INCREDIBLE pitches coming from both sides... You can't fault Webby on this one.

Why does Melvin do anything? The team has been winning despite him the whole season. Imagine if we had a manager with a some sense.

IMO, this was better than the Glavine/Johnson showdown a couple years ago when the Mets won 1-0 thanks to a Kaz Matsui leadoff homerun. I got to sit directly behind homeplate, 5 rows up, which ended up to be one of the best games I have ever been to. This game took the cake though, an unbeleivable showdown. 25 straight scoreless innings for Webb.... Amazing! We hit the ball hard tonight but directly at awaiting outfielders. Sweep the Braves!

Webb vs. Pedro certainly delivered.

Man, tough series to lose. Our starts only gave up 7 earned runs in 22 innings and we still lose the series. :(

Oh well....beat the Braves!

Actually this series made me feel very good about our team....we went toe to toe with a team that is playing some great ball right now and really could have won both of the games we lost. This series more than any other showed me we are legit for the rest of the season.....
