This season it has been hard to slip a shot by Tahlequah boys soccer’s goalie.
In his second season for the Tigers Christian Sosa has allowed just three goals through four regular-season games. Sosa’s play complements a strong overall roster for the Tigers this season.
With senior leaders in the backfield and a tank at goalie, the Tigers are a stout defensive team. THS holds a 22-4 scoring advantage to start the season 4-0.
“I was looking at the numbers and we have only allowed three goals,” Tiger coach Greg Hall said. “Our goalkeeper is in just his second year and has been really solid in his second year. Our defense and our goalkeeper are a big part of that.”
Early in the game Tuesday, March 25, Grove quickly tied the game 1-1 after an early goal from the Tigers.
With the game tied, the Tigers ripped off three straight goals to take a 4-1 win.
After giving up the early goal, Hall saw his defense lock in to secure the win.
“Our back four are seniors, so they have a lot of experience and our defense is playing really well,” Hall said.
Four players scored in that win, showing the Tigers’ depth throughout the roster. Caston Wilson, Logan Knight, Ale Tinajero and Gabe Czlonka all picked up a score in the win.
“It is important to have a depth of scoring,” Hall said. “We have scored 22 goals in our four games. We have defenders, midfielders and strikers who are scoring. It looks good for us we are hoping it continues.”
This strong start marks the first time the Tigers have opened the season with four wins since the 2019 season. In that start, the Tigers haven’t given up more than a goal in a game.
The highlight of the season so far came Monday, March 24 when the Tigers dominated Locust Grove.
THS was scoring early and often picking up a 10-0 win ending the game early due to point differential.
“The guys are buying in this season,” Hall said. “We are playing better as a team collectively rather than individual players on the field.”
The Tigers open their regular-season tournament Friday, March 28 against Christian Heritage.
“We want to win it, but we want to go play a game at a time and see where it goes,” Hall said. “Finishing the tournament healthy is a goal.”
