yep

I guarantee that while Leftwich has his faults, the run heavy offense is Wilks doing

gotta change the HC if you want a new offense

Should we be surprised by the offense? MB and Keim made this hire (not sure which one is most responsible) but they made the decision knowing the type of offense that comes along with it. It's really the exact opposite of BA (no risk it...no biscuit vs uber conservative).

True but...if we are being fair: What did our offense have to work with? Minnesota has a Pro Bowl QB, solid RB's, and great WR group. Their oline can't be anywhere near as bad as ours (think about the rookies and street FA's we have starting).

I am shocked that DeFilippo flamed out like that.
He has his faults, definitely, but I believe Cousins is a coach killer more than anything. He has decent stats, but that’s really a product against really bad teams & stat-pading against good teams when his team is out the game.

Is it possible that DeFillipo is just a scapegoat? The Vikings as a team are underperforming and Zimmer isn't going to can himself. Yes, the offense has struggled the last two games but so have the Rams and Saints. Should McVay be fired? My point is, Cousins is still having a career year and this seems like a huge over reaction.

DeFillipo is definitely just a scapegoat. Fired should be the guys who gave Cousins that big contract and who neglected revamping the OL. However, in this case you see that even the most innovative, brightest offensive minds can't do much without a proper OL. You can scheme around for a few series, maybe a few games. But ultimately a bad OL will kill all your schemes - and hopes.

This.

Cardinals will be OK with DeFilippo as OC next year.

So isn't that an indictment against Gruden and McVay too? If DeFillipo is getting just as much or more out of Cousins as his previous coaches, why is he being fired?

Probably has something to do with being 22nd on 3rd down conversion rate (they were #1 last season), 18th in offensive points per game (7 last year) and being 23rd on Redzone TD scoring (13th last year). The only real change in MN was at QB and OC and they can't get rid of the QB.

That's what a bad OL will do for you. Last year they didn't have a great OL by any means, but their OL was about average. This year their OL sucks. Sounds familiar?

and Rivera has to be on the hot seat. Panthers have gone in the dumpster and a brand new owner who did not hire him. Smith and Turner ...... very meh.

It's true, the offense has taken a step back but hasn't the defense done that too? From 1st to 10th in points allowed? Maybe JD does deserve the axe but it just seems like an overreaction.

I liked him and was hoping Seattle would bring him in as OC. I'd still love him in the building as a passing coordinator to brainstorm ideas on routes, etc.

My in-laws are in MN and are Vikings fans.

They all assumed that Cousins was a huge upgrade over Keenum. He is an upgrade as a QB, but he's not a great QB. He's not a top tier guy and had never won anything of note.

The assumption that Cousins this year would put them over ignores just how over his head Keenum played last year - completing almost 68% of his passes, 22 tds, 7 ints - a 98.3 rating and 74.3 qbr - took 22 sacks and led 3 game winning drives dealing 7.4 yards per attempt

Now Keenum wasn't going to replicate that. However, those stats are also peak Cousins. He isn't going to do significantly better than that.

The main thing hurting them is that Cousins is already at 32 sacks (last year he had 41) and he seems rattled under pressure.

The OL is bad so pressure comes frequently. It also hurts with their type of RB.

The offense needs to stay on schedule and play effeciently and shorten the game for their defense - they are just taking way too many negative plays

Add Wilson to the list of QB's who have had downright bad games in recent weeks. 72 yards passing and a 37.9 rating? Literally his worst game as a pro. Why are so many star QB's suddenly struggling?

Another example of a QB coach becoming OC, maybe too soon? I know that take is “silly” but it is a consideration IMO.

OC is a pretty complex job to take on. Heck, Philly had Petersen, Reich AND DiFlip. That’s a pretty good offensive coaching crew.

The sum of the parts were greater than the individuals, at least in Philly and Minnesota. Reich seems to be the real deal (at least this year)

By what measure? His passer rating is the 3rd best & his QBR 4th best in his 7-year career.

...dave
Highest completion %, lowest interception %, possibly most TD's. It isn't night and day better but it'll likely wind up his best.
