My wife downloaded the free windows 10 but didn't like it as it didn't work for her.. She successfully deleted it, got 8.1 back but can't access her excel files. She clicks on excel and gets the message that "it needs repair, go to control panel." What does she do in control panel??

Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features >Select (or right click on) Microsoft Office 2013 (or whichever version she has) then choose Change > Repair

It will run a repair and likely ask for a restart of your computer once it finishes.

It wasn't compatible with some programs she uses for her work..

Like what? Just curious. Windows 10 is compatible with Office 2007. I have every PC in my house upgraded and I have not had issues with older software not working. There was one game but I ran that in compatibility mode and it's working fine now.

Like I said...just curious. I love love Windows 10.

Me too. I upgraded then realized I'd done it on the hard drive I'd already imaged because I had a problem. Sure enough a month after upgrading, the hard drive failed. So I took the image and installed that drive, upgraded again
and working perfectly.

I absolutely love 10. I hear a completely clean install runs faster but my upgraded one runs noticeably faster than 7 did. If I were allowed to upgrade at work I would.

I don't like it.

It does not have top-level menus. Well technically you can choose that, but it is a hassle to figure out where they are and how to modify the OS to provide that.

Completely agree. The response time on almost every PC has improved for all my computers in the house. There are some tile like features that makes things easier to navigate but I still have the feel of Windows XP.

To me they found the right balance between the old Windows and the new tab like experience.

She uses a custom billing program to bill the state and it didn't work on 10. Had to reinstall 8, and get a new password from them..

Did she try running it in compatibility mode? If not, that would have saved her a bunch of time and effort.

Thanks Rain for the guide. She now has a problem in scanning from a wifi connected printer. She cam send documents to the printer but can't have the printer scan a document ans end it back. She has tried this on her HP printer at work and my Cannon printer here. Is there a setting in the reinstall of windows 8 that she has to change??

I agree and its really easy to get a clean install. First do the upgrade. When its done go into settings>update & security>recovery.reset... and you get a complete clean new install.

I did it to 2 older machines and both work better than ever.

She re-installed windows 8.1. We got the scan situation fixed by downloading a scan
program.

Microsoft typically launches it's best stuff after it's worst stuff.

Windows ME was God awful then came XP.

Window's 8.x was truly puzzling stuff.

I really love Window's 10 though.

It could be the drivers are simply corrupted. When I used to do Desktop support freaking printer drivers were the bane of my existence. Honestly, I would simply uninstall the printer drivers, reinstall them and just update them as a fresh installation.
