Dennis Green top choice for Cardinals

Kent Somers

Dennis Green is the Cardinals' top choice to be their next coach, according to sources close to the situation.

Green and team representatives met for a second interview Tuesday in the San Diego area, where Green lives.

While Green is the leading candidate for the job, no deal is imminent. As of Tuesday afternoon, the team hadn't made a formal contract offer, according to a source.

Money could be a sticking point. It's unknown what the Cardinals are willing to pay for a new coach, but if they want Green or former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, it probably will cost them in the range of $3 million a year - far more than the team has ever paid any of its coaches.

Dave McGinnis, fired last week, made about $900,000 a year.

Tom Coughlin, hired as the New York Giants coach Tuesday, has agreed to a four-year deal reportedly worth about $3 million a year.

Both Green and Fassel, the team's two candidates with head coaching experience, will command that much.

Green coached the Minnesota Vikings for 10 seasons, taking them to the playoffs eight times.

Cardinals officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday, and Green's agent, Gary O'Hagan, did not return phone calls.

Michael Bidwill, the Cardinals vice president and general counsel, said Monday that the team planned to have second interviews with its four candidates, including New England defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel and Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson.

Crennel and Johnson can't be interviewed again until their teams are out of the playoffs.

Bidwill said Monday there was not a favorite among the four. Green also has interviewed with Washington and Oakland, but he hasn't received an offer from either team. Besides Arizona, Fassel has interviewed with Buffalo and Washington.

My first question would be, "If they aren't willing to pay $3 mil. a year then why are they even talking to Fassel and Green?"

I have to believe that they are willing to pay that much.

Renz..I agree.. They would not have interviewed green and fassel in the 1st place unless they are willing to pay up. The Cardinals are not really in a position where they can act like they want a guy....and then fail to offer them enough money...with the money they were willing to throw at Colvin....you have to think they would have $3 mil per year left in the budget for a coach.

Fassel is also my top choice. Howver, the Cardinal organization is not the Cowboy or 49er organization. Honestly, they would be fortunate to land a coach with the credentials of a Dennis Green.

Dennis Green will be a cancer that slowly ruins whatever trust bill sr has left in giving up control.

For some reason the thought of Michael Bidwill and Rod Graves taking Denny Green out for a test drive isn't sitting well with me.

That said, I'm against retread Dennis Green. The man will go out a la Buddy Ryan and destroy any positive momentum this team has. He failed to get one of the best football teams assembled into the Superbowl, how the hell could he win here?

I have to agree with that, this scares the hell out of me. If it does happen I hope I'm wrong, actually I pray that I'm wrong. I was very intrigued by Bill Walsh's overwhelming endorsment of him though......

I hope everything works out.

Yeah, Mike Tice sure has brought them into the promised land, hasn't he?

Gimme a break. My grandfather is from Minnesota, a lifelong Vikings fan, and he's actually interested in the Cardinals now because of the possibility of Dennis Green coaching. That should speak volumes right there.

From 7-9 to 5-11 to 4-12 is positive momentum? The front office has shown some progress with contracts, free agents etc IMO, but our on-the-field performance has been going South.

I liked what Green had to say about the franchise after his first interview. I think he will be a good hire.

No one who is "a cancer" lasts ten years with the same franchise like Green did in Minnesota.

My take -

According to you guys - Dennis Green has the reputation of "not playing well with others." For the time being, I'll accept that.

What this suggests is that Green will have a problem if he's part of a collaberative organizational setup.

But if he's allowed to run his own show (without having to worry about rivals for authority) he should - based on his track record - do OK.

But not without some risk. Mr. B gave Buddy the keys to the Caddy and Buddy abused the system. A certain degree of faith by Cardinal mgt. has to go with the job, and we have to hope that Denny won't abuse it.

And, of late, the Cardinals have been running a collaberative shop, and this may not turn out to be a good fit. It depends on whether Michael, Rod and Denny come to an agreement on the nature of their working relationship

Anyway, that's how I see it.

I think they are just hashing out the decision making tree and seeing if they can all live with it.

Most of my reservations about Green will be solved if he has to get final approval on his personell decisions.

I think that the ideal situation is one in which he has input but must sell his choices to management and then management holds veto power but rarely uses it.

The key is to lay it all out there, best if in writing and then move forward.

Michael being a lawyer is really cool in this respect he won't get hoodwinked too easy by anyone.

So even though Green wasn't my favorite I am resolving myself to be happy about it since there is almost no chance we won't improve a great deal and let the Cardinal fever commence....:D

Green is a huge upgrade over Buddy Ryan. Buddy sure knows defense, and thats it. Everyone considers Green the anti Mac. Well we have suffered thru Tobin who is a step above a coma, to MAC who is constantly on a sugar buzz. SAME RESULTS. Green will be the best coach since Coryell. He has proven his ability to adapt to constant change, and still produce a competitive team. Forget the past baggage on him. Green will be hungry to prove himself to everyone who dissed him the past 2 years. He will assemble a top notch staff, who will teach and raise the level of play of even our lowly Cards. Other than the debacle of Underwood on draft day, he has done very well in identifying talent, something we really SUCK at. Roll the dice on Green, and by the time the stadium opens we will be a playoff caliber team!!
