All of you have a right to question the moves and cuts DG is doing especially on defense. Denny knows offense and really will build a terrific high scoring offense with the Cards. However, with the Vikings, he did a poor job on the defensive side. When he took over the Viking head coaching job; they had a very good defense with Tony Dungy the defensive coordinator. While Tony was there the defense was excellent; once he left it went downhill. DG went through several coordinators after Dungy. He reached big time on his defensive draft picks. In the last several years the Viking defense became a joke. Mike Tice has spent the last three drafts and free agent periods rebuilding it.

IMO that Denny will build a playoff team however I hope that he does better here than in Minnesota with the defense.

I wouldn't worry, Green has sat a couple of seasons out and knew he would return. He knew who he wanted (coaches) before he picked a team that was suitable to his liking. Green coming to Az. is the best thing thats happened to the Cards since their arrival. IMO.

DG sitting out the past 2 years and doing TV for ESPN, I think he learned from his early mistakes on the defensive side and this time maybe deep in his mind he know he needs a balance team on both side of the ball.

I don't want to sound negative. I'm very excited about DG as the head coach. In fact I went out and bought season tickets the day after he was hired. Yep, I'm a bandwagon hopper!!! I'm impressed with the free agent signings of Berry and Macklin and the draft picks of Dansby and Dockett. They should all help the defense. I do hope as you have stated that he learned from his mistakes.

Once again....

In Green's ten seasons in Minnesota, his defense was in the top half of the league five times.

In the Cardinals 18 years here, they've been in the top half defensively only twice.

Which record is better? Hmmmmm......

How is it we know so much about great defense here? We sure haven't seen it. Especially the last three years, all of which Bell and Tanner played in, and we had horrible blowouts and record low sack numbers.

So again, explain how Green is messing up our D? How can you make a turd look worse?

I want Gilbert Brown for 3rd and short situations! I bet he'd come cheap!

Also, Wakefield can technically switch to DT if needed. He's a big body, maybe cross-train him during camp? We have a decent amount of DE's on this year's squad.

Read my post. After Dungy left the defense WENT DOWNHILL. The last three years they were ranked close to the bottom. Sorry but you have been listening to the bull that VikesFan has put on this board regarding DG. I was there attending all the home games, going to training camp, watching the away games on TV and mixing with die heart Viking fans. The media and fans felt that he neglected the defense and they became terrible.
All I am saying here is that Denny has never been a good defensive coach.
His concentration has been on building a high power offense. I hope he learned from his mistakes. He has added some good defensive players.
IMO we will see an excitng offense this season and will be debating the defense problems on the board all season. I hope that I am wrong!!

I haven't read vikesfan's posts for weeks, so, no, that is not where my opinion came from. My opinion is from attending all the CARDINALS home games, going to training camp, watching the away games on TV and mixing with die hard Cards fans. Our defense has sucked butt almost every year. How Green's defenses did in Minnesota sounds pretty good to me, none of them were as bad as what we saw last year.

Who knows? Maybe Pendergast is the next Dungy. If not, we can't do much worse than last year. ANY improvement, on offense or defense, is welcomed by me. It's been five long years since we've seen very good football on EITHER side of the ball. So, I don't need some ex-Viking fan telling me what I need to worry about. Your like an undergrad lecturing a room full of PH.Ds on what bad football is. Brother, you don't know the half of it.

Any team needs good players, the winning teams generally have great coaches. We will see what we will see, but I like our chances better this year than ever before defensivly. Green will at the very least manage the situation instead of the situation managing him. You don't put out 100% yoiu don't play. These coaches were hired minutes after he took the job. I believe he knows what has to take place. We couldn't stop the run last year with the players that are now gone, so major change was in order and I'd rather play with the change than keep a player simply because we need depth.

Thanks, but I feel just fine! I'm excited to see what the season will bring. No es-Viking fan can make me more optimistic or more pessimistic.

An interesting discussion on what bad football is........hmmmmm.........with the Cardinal record over the last 18 years as you so state.......I'll have to agree that you have seen worse football than I have.
So how is this for you: Denny has never been a good defensive coach, however the Cardinals have been so crapy the past 18 years that whatever Denny does will be a vast improvement!!! :D

I said some of the same things about DG at first, "ie the defensive shortcummings his last few years in Minny HA HA" but then after actually studying it more since he came to the Cardinals my opinion changed.

He at least had the good sense to hire Dungy and maybe his replacements weren't good but now with time to think about it he brought in a DC from Dallas and over the last few years the only thing going for Dallas was their D.

I am pretty confident the defense will improve and eventually be quite good. I don't know how long that will take but it can not get any worse IMHO.

Think positive

With the offense that Green is developing, the run stuffing ability of the defense might be a lower priority compared to QB pressure ability. In most of our games this year, our opponents will probably have to pass in order to catch up.

Dennis Green....

is he most efficient, competent, organized and professional coach we have had PERHAPS in franchise history. Please note, I did not say he was the best coach ever in the NFL.
Don Coryell was never known for his defense's either, but I do know we went to the playoffs more than once and had one of the most exciting teams in the NFL. JIm Hanifan might get an honorable mention here, but other than that and in retrospect, we have had a bunch of unknown and untested coaches, with no say, no balls, and/or no knowledge, coaching for a totally inept organization.

That has all changed. Maybe it's a mirage, but this organization has changed. Rod Graves has done about as much as he could do in his short tenure. Everything he has done since taking over( excluding trading down in last years draft) has been a positive step forward. The hiring of Dennis Green is the icing on Rod Graves and this clubs cake.

We have been so deprieved of good football that it makes it almost impossible to be optimistic. I, for one, am not going to worry about how good Greens defensive coaching ability. If we become a winning team, and I'm not talking Super Bowl Champs, I personally won't care if we are winning our games 41-38. A high potent offense will sure be enjoyable to watch after years and years of total crap.

Just win. Just win more games than you lose. A 9-7 season this year will probably mean we were in the playoff hunt going into the last week of the season. Hell, it might be good enough to make the playoffs.

You cannot give DG blame for being bad on defense and then give credit for the Vikes being good on defense to someone else. That is completely unfair.
He either gets credit and blame or is absolved.

DG had a 6th ranked defense in the NFL years after Dungy had left.

With the FA/CAP system in place you cannot have a great defense and offense at the same time like you could in the old days. One side tends to be better.

Look at the supposed offensive genius Billick in BAL he won a SB cause of the defense M Lewis built and ran and he still has not created anything resembling offense in BAL.

DG had a top 7 defense in TOs 7 times. He had very respectable defenses throught his tenure.

Look at Dungy in INDI has he created a great defense there.

Most of the defensive players were in TB before Dungy got there. And he brought along another DG hire Monte Kiffen who is still there.

DG is underrated when it comes to defense. Three times in top 10 run defense and three times in top 10 pass defense.

DG had good defenses in MIN. I have already listed the good defensive players he had. His offense was so great that his defense is underrated, believe DG is about winning games that means offense and defense.
