Every
NFL fan remembers then-Cardinals coach Dennis Green’s famous post-game rant after his team blew a big lead against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football, which culminated with, “They are who we thought they were! And we let ‘em off the hook!”
Green may not have fond memories of the game that inspired the rant, as it was part of an eight-game losing streak in what would turn out to be the last season of his coaching career. But the rant itself has been lucrative for Green.
In an interview with Darren Rovell of CNBC, Green explains that trademarking the phrase has allowed him to profit from its use in everything from merchandise to TV commercials.
“I thought
if anyone was going to capitalize on it, it should be me,” Green tells Rovell. “You can go on
DennisGreen.com right now and buy the caps. . . . I called up my attorney and we got it approved pretty quickly. It was hard to dispute that anyone else came up with or used the phrase before I did. As far as making a lot of money off of it, I have the Coors Light commercial, but I’m exploring how much more is out there.”
We’re not sure why Green hasn’t also trademarked “crown their ass,” but we’re glad this gives us another excuse to post that great video:
