We saw this last night. I hesitate to give this too much of a build up, but I thought this was an outstanding must see film.

I thought this was just going to be a cool naval aviator film about the Korean War. The war is just a backdrop for part of the movie. This is a very personal heart-wrenching story about one amazing man's journey during a very difficult era.

And the actress who played Elizabeth Taylor did a great job. Holy cow, lol.

We saw this on Saturday afternoon and really liked it.

I guess some of those Corsairs and a couple of pilots who flew in the movie are from an air museum in Madras Oregon.

Beautiful planes. I am going to try to get over there this Summer.

Nice. We've been to Madras before but not to their air museum. We were there for the Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo a couple of years ago. It is 2 hours due South of The Dalles and an hour North of Bend.

Here's an interview in which Majors talks about the planes being private planes at about the 1:42 mark.

Good movie, not great. Wife and I enjoyed it a lot, though.

I think a little longer film would have worked much better, perhaps providing some flashbacks from Jesse Brown. He just comes off as a sullen jerk for the first half of the film. If they had flashed back to some of the things he talks about later in the picture, it would of worked better..... IMHO, of course.

But what was really a pleasure for me was that my dad, as a WW2 Marine in the South Pacific, did non-engine related repair work on F4U Corsairs (as well as TBF Avengers, Wildcats, Dauntless's and others), even working on a few planes from Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep Squuadron. He had some great stories.

Edit: Both of us would have liked a little more background on Tom Hudner, too. A guy that goes to the Naval Academy (needs Congressional appointment) is not someone you would expect to be completely without racial prejudice, especially in 1950. So how come?

My take was that Ensign Brown was carrying a lot of baggage with him from a lot of the Jackie Robinson crap he had to deal with. The Officers were pretty good to him, but he had to endure a lot coming up through training, etc. That may be what the actor was trying to reflect.

Pretty cool stuff on your Dad, those were awesome planes. I have some photos of the aircraft carrier my dad was on in 1947, I haven't done any research on what kind they are, but now I am curious.

Hudner was a real life hero and a solid dude from what I read on Wikipedia. His family is still friends with Brown's family.

Agree with what you've said here. I just wish they would have fleshed out both characters more.

Many, many Corsairs were destroyed at the end of WW2 and Korean wars. A real shame.

Not sure what kind of planes those are, but this is the USS Coral Sea on its "shakedown cruise" to Panama in 1948.
