I like the pick, the big league staff is solid already and we don't have many high ceiling pitchers right now, why not take a shot at a high school high ceiling pitcher

Big numbers
Parker's 97-mph fastball could bring him millions of dollars in draft
By Michael Pointer

June 7, 2007

OSSIAN, Ind. It has become a regular sight in this town about 20 miles south of Fort Wayne.
Norwell pitcher Jarrod Parker heads to the bullpen to warm up, and nearly a dozen major league scouts follow, huddling along the left field line with notebooks in hand.
They sit in the bleachers behind the backstop during the game, radar guns extended. Local fans peek over their shoulders, seeing where the hard-throwing right-hander's next pitch might register.
Sometimes, it reads 97 mph -- the best high school fastball in the country.
"All the kids around here say, 'Man, you're going to be on TV someday,' " Parker said.
Perhaps as soon as today.
For the first time, baseball's annual draft will be televised. Parker declined an invitation to attend the draft show in Orlando, Fla., but he figures to get some airtime nonetheless. He might become the second-highest pick directly from an Indiana high school. Former Kokomo High School left-hander Pat Underwood was the second player selected in 1976. Parker is projected as a first-round pick, and analysts said his name could be one of the first 10 called.
Not that he's overly concerned.
"I just try to focus on one day at a time and not concentrate on that fact," he said recently. "It (playing in the major leagues) is going to happen sooner or later, whether I go to college or sign. I'm just doing everything I can to stay healthy between starts."
Parker is 10-0 with a 0.13 ERA and 101 strikeouts. Norwell, which plays Saturday in the semistates, is 32-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
The key number, however, figures to be between $1.5 million and $2 million. That's the signing bonus he figures to receive if he is selected in the middle of the first round. Baseball America has him ranked as the 19th-best prospect in the nation.
"It may have even been modest in that because of his arm strength and he has shown a feel for two secondary pitches," said associate editor Alan Matthews, who covers high schools and the draft for Baseball America. "He's not a grip-it and rip-it type pitcher. He's got a good breaking ball."
Parker has signed with Georgia Tech, but dollars like that -- or perhaps higher -- likely will send him to the professional ranks instead.
"Is he signable? Absolutely he's signable," said Brent Parker, Jarrod's father. "He wants to go pro and he wants to do it out of high school, if everything is right."
Matthews said Parker was considered a top-five round prospect last summer after a series of strong performances, including a stint with USA Baseball's junior national team that finished second in the World Junior Championship.
The fact he was throwing so hard early this high school season pushed him well into the first round. Matthews said that is rare for a high school pitcher, especially one from a northern school.
Parker doesn't look like a power pitcher. He is listed at 6-1 and 175 pounds, though he said he has added strength in the weight room and now weighs 183.
"God gave him a great arm," Norwell coach Kelby Weybright said. "He understands mechanics. He's very fluid. But at the end of the day, it comes down to arm speed."
Parker has been compared to Atlanta's Tim Hudson and Houston's Roy Oswalt, both slightly-built, hard-throwing right-handers.
Parker grew up in a baseball-playing family. Older brother Justin was a 43rd-round draft pick in 2005 and now plays shortstop at Wright State. The two were teammates at Fort Wayne Wayne High School. After Justin graduated, Jarrod transferred.
People close to Jarrod said a turning point came two summers ago, when he excelled at the Area Code Baseball Games, a prospect-laden, invitation-only event in Long Beach, Calif.
"He started believing in himself," said Mark DeLaGarza, Parker's manager with the Fort Wayne-based Summit City Sluggers summer team and a part-time scout for the Minnesota Twins. "He came back from that a much more focused and confident kid."
Parker expects to spend part of today at practice, then watch the draft at home with a few friends while his mother makes cookies.
"You never know what's going to happen," Parker said. "I want to go early, but I really just want to play ball."
Draft revision

Today, Norwell pitcher Jarrod Parker could become the second highest drafted high school baseball player in Indiana history. Following is a list of Hoosiers selected in the first round. It does not include college players, including two former No. 1 overall picks: Andy Benes (1988, Evansville) and Bryan Bullington (2002, Ball State).
Pick Player (high school) Year MLB team
2 Pat Underwood (Kokomo) 1976 Tigers

21 Gary Thurman (North Central) 1983 Royals
22 Tony Moretto (Evansville Harrison) 1975 Reds
23 Steve Reed (Fort Wayne Wayne) 1974 Reds
24 Andy Brown (Richmond) 1998 Yankees
27 A.J. Zapp (Center Grove) 1996 Braves
31* Preston Mattingly (Evansville Central) 2006 Dodgers

With Webb, Owings, Parker, Scherzer, Gonzalez starting, and Pena, Lyon, Valverde coming in for relief.... The Diamondbacks future pitching is looking scary!

I'm really liking this pick after looking at some more scouting reports. We have 2 more picks in the supplemental round I believe hopefully we can grab another power arm with one of those picks.

I like they found a hard-throwing righty with control. That's more than half the battle -- learning how to use the plate to your advantage. You can get a lot of mileage just off that. Shoot, Steve Avery won 100 games with below-average stuff just playing the corners with his weak fastball.

If the curveball's poppin' at sub-80 speed, I'd ditch it for a cutter of some sorts. Keep the change up as long as he's not serving up bunnies ... you have to know when to throw it, and it ain't knee-high when you're ahead in the count against guys that are seconds late on your fastball.

I'm satisfied.

Pick 50 - Wes Roemer, RHP, Cal State Fullerton.

This guy I know, and I like. Front-line starter for a big time college program.

I had posted the picked so far in the other thread.

Not too happy with the draft right now... but it will beat a Coyotes' Draft any day of the week... then again... that isn't saying much.

D’backs Continue To Score Into Fifth Round

Posted Jun. 7, 2007 7:42 pm by Alan Matthews
Filed under: Draft Day: June 7

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.–While picks are rolling off the tongue of Major League Scouting Bureau director Frank Marcos at a rapid pace, it’s still easy to do a quick review and see that the Diamondbacks have had among the first day’s most fruitful drafts.

Arizona just popped Tyrell Worthington in the fifth round, adding the uber-athlete from an eastern North Carolina high school. Worthington is a raw baseball player who has committed to East Carolina to play baseball and football, but he might be signable for something around slot money as a fifth-round pick by Arizona.

Add the toolsy outfielder to the list of Jarrod Parker, Wes Roemer, Ed Easley, Barry Enright, Reynoldo Navarro and Sean Morgan, and Arizona’s haul is very promising.
Can't say that I really agree. The D'backs got a good prospect with Parker and Worthington sounds good but other than that I am not impressed. No scouting report makes any other these other guys interesting. I hope I am proven wrong.

Interesting take - I have read mostly favorable reviews from the "experts", but heck, what do they know?

Sounds like Arizona is taking a bunch of high-ceiling guys this round. Maybe they are hoping for some diamonds in the rough...

It's nice to be able to have that ability to not have to worry about filling positions, rather being able to draft for the BPA.

The more I read about Parker the more I love the pick...

A pick that I really like is LHP Sam Solis in the 18th round. He is a lot like Brett Anderson in that he throws strikes, has a good pitcher's frame (6'5''), and has a good number of plus-to-average offerings (4 total: sinking fastball, curve, change, and slider). Where he differs from Anderson is in his delivery. He has a sort of herky-jerk arm action that scares some scouts, but if he could sign and alter his delivery he might be a steal.

Edit: forgot to mention that he is a product of Agua Fria HS in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

It seems like a number of the pitchers we are picking up had poor Junior or Senior years but stellar Sophomore/Junior years.

For example, as mentioned in the Arizona Republic, Roemer had a really good Sophomore year but struggled with giving up hits this year (of course, this is in comparison to his other years. He still had a good year overall). Another example is Bryan Augenstein (6'5'', 225 .lbs) who went 9-6 with a 3.07 era in 15 starts last year. This year he regressed going 8-5 with a 4.98 era in 16 starts.

Hopefully a number of these guys will be able to return to their previous form and pitch well for us.

In addition, as expected, the D'backs are making a run on college pitchers. However, I expect some more picks to fill up some needs for the organization (mainly Catchers and Third-Basemen).

So far day two has been a success for Arizona and the overall draft is looking relatively good. They have made a real run at College Seniors, which I really do not approve of but then again it is the later rounds and a number of these guys will just be fillers in the Minor Leagues.

I am now beginning the see the point of the D'backs madness with drafting all these P's. You all would say because their farm system just doesn't have that many and you are right but also consider the fact that FA pitchers are the hardest thing to acquire because of the bidding war that goes on for even mediocre P's.

It would be easier to acquire an impact bat like a 1/3B than a SP, which is what I think the D'Backs will go after this offseason.

They got some good P prospects in Parker, Roemer, and Solis if he signs. Also some of the other college and JC P's they drafted could pan out as well.

With the emergence of Mark Reynolds I think Tracy maybe the odd man out and could possibly be moved to accomodate Reynolds.

The only problem with the 2008 FA class is that barring a trade the 1/3B field will not provide much help. The lists I've seen have Adam Dunn as the only 1B available and alot of older 3B w/ A Rod being the marquee player at that position. Texeira will be available but at Scott Boras rates which will probably put us out of the sweepstakes.

I like the picks. Way I see it, you can never have enough quality, young arms to build with.
