Pitcher • R/R • Junior • 6-2 • 190

Downey, CA • Warren HS • Cerritos College

Junior College: A two-year infielder and pitcher at Cerritos College ... hit .259 with six doubles and nine RBIs as a shortstop and third baseman; as a pitcher was 2-2 with a 5.23 ERA and three saves, striking out 29 batters in 31 innings ... helped the Falcons to a 33-16 record, a South Coast Conference title and into the first
round of the state playoffs ... as a freshman hit .300, starting at third base, as the Falcons finished second in the conference ... drove in 33 runs and hit 12 doubles and four home runs ... played summer ball for the San Luis Obispo Blues, compiling a 1-0 record and stingy 1.14 ERA in 15 appearances ... struck out 41 batters in 23.2 innings. "He will compete with Garrett Olson for the No. 1 or 2 spot in the rotation," said head coach Larry Lee. "He's a converted shortstop with two legitimate strikeout pitches -- a slider and splitter. He pitched very little at Cerritos College, but is a very good athlete. He pitches in the upper 80s with a hard slurve."

Prep: Lettered in baseball and basketball as a senior at Warren High ... led baseball team to a 23-7 record and the San Gabriel Valley League title under head coach Steve Fullerton ... hit above .400 as a senior ... he was a guard on the basketball team which went 24-6 and finished second in league ... earned the Golden Bear Award.

Jessie is a freshman volleyball player at San Jose State ... plays the guitar ... enjoys surfing and golfing as hobbies ... born Aug. 21, 1983, in Downey ... majors in kinesiology.

We seem to picking sluggers for position players, and guys with low walks to strikeouts among pitchers...guess the team's recent woes have impressed themselves on the scouting department. Good luck, Jimmy Shull - you are this year's lucky Round Eight pitcher.

Lester Contreras was a HS player we drafted last year - he's from Florida - it appears he's in St. Petersburg JC this year, but I can't get their roster to actually come up.

16th round• SS Mark Reynolds has good actions, with average arm strength and range, but most scouts think he will have to move to second base in pro ball. He is decent with the bat (.288-10-43) but has a slow trigger and tries to play a big man's game instead of playing to his strengths.

Sorry - still can't get anything more on Contreras. Bunch of shortstop types.

Same here..... I guess the Dbacks drafted him in the 43rd round last year.... We should get Tommy Lasorda to give us more detail on him! :D Sorry, couldnt resist, but he always makes the draft much needed "comic relief"...

BA has this on Carter:Stanford normally hangs on to its juniors, but most scouts expect OF Chris Carter to be a relatively easy sign. A highly-touted recruit, Carter has had a checkered career at Stanford. He was set back immediately by a shoulder injury in his first fall practice and played through the injury as a freshman before finally having surgery. His arm strength never returned and he became such a liability with the glove, both in left field and at first base, that he spent most of his career at Stanford as a DH. Carter has one exceptional tool, massive raw power. He loves to hit balls 500 feet in batting practice and had 23 homers in just 324 college at-bats. But his swing is often out of control and he didn't make consistent contact. He projects as a .250 hitter with 35-home run potential. He was patient enough to draw nearly as many walks (67) as strikeouts (69), making him attractive to an American League club that values plate discipline

How bizarre - how schizophrenogenic - our scouts and minor league guys select for power plus high OBP again this year. OBP is actively ignored and even discouraged on the big team. Wonder if the high OBP piece will ever filter UPWARDS to the top?

NORTHEAST VALLEY - Already, Craig Heyer has lost more games (four) than he did all of last season (three) when he was among the state's top pitchers.

But look deeper, and you'll see a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander with an earned-run average below 1.00 and a desire to help his team win games, besides putting up personal records.

He is 3-4 heading into the week. Coronado is 11-5, 4-1 in East Sky.

But there is nobody else coach Buck Holmes would want on the hill in the biggest game than Heyer, a senior who, along with the other senior, catcher Louis Marson, get evaluated every game by major-league scouts.

"I think early-on, we didn't know how to play defense behind him," Holmes said. "The kids were tentative. Now, they're settling in."

The Dons, who were rained out Friday, play Arcadia and Mesa Desert Ridge in East Sky games.

Their strong start is a tribute to the job Holmes has done with a mostly inexperienced lineup. Only Marson and Heyer started on last year's team that lost to Chaparral in the 4A final.

Freshman Cody Fortney starts at second base, bats leadoff and gives the Dons help on the mound.

Heyer got a win in relief on Wednesday against Payson, which led 3-0 before the Dons rallied to win 8-7.

Heyer had three straight strikeouts.

"The first thing Louis said when he got back in the dugout was that (Heyer) was throwing harder (than he did the previous day in his start against Chaparral)," Holmes said.

Heyer has occasionally popped 90 mph fastballs but usually throws between 85 and 88, Holmes said.
