I don't know if this helps or not. Hernandez seems to have the same problem the rest of our pitchers do.......he can't pitch. I hope the Dbacks didn't give up any good minor leaguers. Hopefully they were a few A ball guys.

It says Matt Chico and Garrett Mock in the article.

Washington HAS to be including cash in this deal. There is no way the DBacks take on his $7million salary for '07. Still not a bad trade, though his 5.5+ ERA in a pitcher-friendly park isn't exactly encouraging.

They actually gave up two decent young pitchers according to Ken Rosenthal. They gave up Garrett Mock who is 4-8 this year but they also gave up Matt Chico who is 7-2 in Double-A with a 2.22 ERA. The only way this deal really makes sense is if the injury to Webb is more serious then they are letting on and they really really need a guy, that or Washington is paying most of the 7 million for next year.

If the D'backs got cash in return and if Livan can put together a string of games, this isn't a bad deal. Historically he's more of a groundball pitcher, so hopefully that translates well to Chase.

With Rizzo one of the key guys over in Washington I can say I'm not pleased in giving up any prospects to them, but hopefully our guys know what they're doing.

Livan was a good pitcher once, right? Maybe he can regain that form for a bit.

How many starters with 5+ ERAs does one team need? And isn't this guy related to El Duque??

I think Mock and Chico's stock just went up. See you in the All-Star game soon, guys.

Yeah, they be brothers.... also nobody really knows how old they are. Livan is not 31, I would bet money on that.

This team needed a starting pitcher and once Nippert flamed out again I guess Byrnes realized he had to go outside the organization. Livan has pitched well in his last five starts and historically is a much better second half pitcher. I'm not too sure what I think of this trade yet.

If they gave up our two BEST pitching prospects for this frickin' has- been, then we are screwed to a wall, and Rizzo proves his inestimable worth. Holy crap. What a bad deal -- what to be a wild card and get bounced out in the first round? Shades of Voldemort. :barf:

Micah Owings is a our best pitching prospect right now. The Dbacks are still going to go out and get another frontline starter via free agency in the offseason, so it's not like we are completely banking on our prospects to pan out next year. Not to mention the Dbacks got some solid college pitchers in the draft this year, so I would expect to see some of those guys to rise through the ranks quickly. Not a great deal, but it really can't be judged until the end of the season.

Since the all-star break he has gone 3-0 in 5 starts with an ERA of 3.27. He knows the NL West and is a workhorse. He is 5-2 at Chase in 8 starts with a 3.97 ERA which isn't bad at all. Of course stats don't mean anything. He needs to pitch and go deep in games for me to like this move.

Ugh. I agree BAD trade. Why, oh why do we still insist on picking up washed up pitchers?

And I almost posted when Rizzo went to the Nationals that if he came asking for any of our players, those are the ones we should hold on to since he has such a good eye for talent and since he knows our team so well. But I figured that would just be stating the obvious. So once again...

Ugh.

Is Livan Hernandez's posted age (31) believed to be accurate?

The deal just got a little harder to swallow. ESPN radio is reporting they only got 2 million from Washington.

Sigh. I thought the 'bend over, we have a slighly used Latino starter for you' days were behind us forever. Well, I guess in a manner of speaking, they are behind us.

I don't really care about giving up Mock. If you can't succeed in the Southern League, what chance do you have of succeeding in the NL (or PCL for that matter). Sure, he had a couple of dominating starts now and again but those were really few and far between.

I'm more disappointed about losing Chico. He's lefthanded and dominated in both the Southern League and California League. I know he doesn't profile as an ace, but he's still an intriguing prospect.

Don't like the trade at all. I'd rather hold on to Chico and NOT win the WC this year.

I do have some doubts that I already stated earlier about Chico. He is only 5'11" tall and throws in the high 80's. Time will only tell but I won't go nuts saying the sky is falling. It's very hard to judge a minor league pitcher, especially guys in Double A ball.

Lame trade, unless Livan really turns it on the rest of the year (I give it a 10% chance of happening), this trade is a dud.

I'm obviously on the other side of this trade, I don't mind it all. Sure he's getting old and hasn't had a good year but he is a good addition to a horrible pitching staff (in excpetion to Webb of course). He has pitched the ball well the last month in a half or so, eats up 6+ innings in nearly every start, and is very good defensively and with the bat. He is notorious for being a second half pitcher and could be more motivated to pitch well considering we're in contention. I'll wait and see but I'm gonna give this trade a shot

On the negative side, dealing with Rizzo worries me a bit. I'll admit I don't know much about Chico other then that he's a finesse lefty who has been relatively successful in our farm system and Mock has decent stuff (both were high draft picks, 2nd rounders I believe). It's so hard to know how a pitching prospect will pan out so I can't blame Byrnes too much for dealing them. The other negative is there is no way Livan is 31 years od. Has to be closer to 40

Starting pitching costs a lot, because it is a rare commodity. Livan has been pretty good the last four or five years, and gives us a legitimate shot of making it to the playoffs, especially if he keeps pitching as he has of late.
