Since Bumgarner declined a qualifying offer in November, the Diamondbacks will forfeit their second-round pick to sign him.
Wow. 5 year / $85 Million. He'll be 31 in August, has pitched over 200 innings 7 times in his 10 year career. Has a career 1.11 WHiP!
Really didn't see this happening. Hazen is such a stud!
The Diamondbacks need a legitimate ace, for the same reason that we
obtained Greinke.
It is needed to put us in the category of a contender. As Yogi Berra said,
"Baseball is 90 per cent mental. The other half is physical."
To paraphrase what 1Sun posted, the only way to keep developing Robbie
Ray as a solid #2 or #3 starter is to have a solid #1.
Mad Bum is certainly not what he once was but, at the top of the rotation,
he is a major step up from what we are. At less cost than Greinke.
I didn't think we had a chance of landing Mad Bum, but I am thrilled that he
will be heading our staff.
Now we need a solid setup and closer. With that, it will so much easier to
develop a dependable rotation of pitchers.
I thought he has not been an "Ace" for a year or two? But, hope I'm wrong. I hope he does real well . I have always liked him, even though he was A Giant (just don't like the Giants).
The word “ace” in MLB is like “superstar” in the NBA. It gets used way too much.

Now they have super max...Max Player!
They are two different meanings. An NBA superstar takes over at the end of close games,
among other things, potentially in every game. Some teams have no superstars. It also
applies to players who put up outstanding individual stats, whether they lead their team
to victories or not.
An MLB ace excels in two roles, primarily, every 5th game. Hopefully, to get the team off
to a good start in an important series, such as playoffs and to stop losing streaks when it
is his turn to start. Some teams have an undependable ace, but he is still his team's ace.
Such as Robbie Ray by default last season after Greinke was gone.
Greinke was a declining ace. Mad Bum is an ace, possible somewhat declining.
Phoenix has small market teams. We have to settle for hand-me-downs.
I'll say that until DBook earns All Star recognition.
https://arizonasports.com/story/2195980/olney-bumgarner-is-a-diamondbacks-sized-cole-strasburg-deal/The D-backs plan to sign their next ace to a five-year, $85 million deal, nearly a third of what other top free agents are getting.
In a way, it’s a more responsible version of signing former pitcher Zack Greinke. In December 2015, Greinke joined Arizona on a six-year, $206.5 million deal. Greinke’s deal worked out to $34 million a year while Bumgarner’s will consume nearly half of that at $17 million a year.
“It’s proportional risk,” Olney said.
