Scouting Report:
D-backs: Owings got a no-decision against the Red Sox on Saturday at Chase Field, but he deserved a better fate. The right-hander turned a 3-2 lead over to the bullpen after six strong innings, but it could not hold it. Owings had not started a game since May 29, but he didn't show any signs of rust. The largest crowd in D-backs history and facing the Red Sox did not faze the rookie, who has continued to display remarkable poise. Last year he was a combined 16-2 at Double-A and Triple-A.
Orioles: Bedard was hit hard in his last start, pitching only five innings in a loss to Colorado, his shortest outing in his past nine starts. He left several fastballs up in the zone, and the Rockies made him pay, totaling three runs on nine hits with a home run. Bedard was still able to strike out eight using a biting curveball, and he leads the American League with 103 strikeouts this season. He has now won only one game in his past 10 starts.
Scouting Report:
D-backs: Johnson helped the D-backs avoid a sweep at the hands of the Red Sox on Sunday at Chase Field, allowing just one run on four hits over six innings while fanning nine. Johnson has gotten better with each start and threw a season-high 113 pitches against Boston. He adjusts to what he has working on any given day. If he has his fastball and slider working he'll rely on them, but if not he'll mix in two-seam fastballs and splits. The Big Unit will be gunning for his 285th career victory.
Orioles: Burres pitched in relief on Tuesday against Washington, but only because Monday's off-day allowed the Orioles to skip his turn in the rotation. The southpaw has thrown at least five innings and allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts. Burres is 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA in two home starts and ranks fourth on the Baltimore staff in strikeouts (36).
Scouting Report:
D-backs: Webb deserved a better fate in his last start against the Yankees in New York. An error by Orlando Hudson opened the door to a three-run first inning for the Bronx Bombers who went on to win 4-1. The loss snapped a three-start win streak for Webb.
Orioles: Cabrera was pounded by the Nationals in his last start, clearly his worst outing of the season. He tied a season low by lasting only 4 2/3 innings and tied a career high by surrendering three home runs. Cabrera never settled down and finished with seven earned runs on seven hits and four walks. His season walks total is now 45, the highest in the league.
