I'm sorry, but how could anyone think for a minute Ortiz could go deeper? He is Dessens all over, and when he falls apart around mid fifth or sixth, it's a damn fast ride down the water slide.

Melvin needs to get over there and take him out once he starts to fall apart. There is no reason to leave him in there for that long. 7 ER...when it was 6-2? I dont get it.

I'm not going to defend Ortiz, the guy's a train wreck waiting to happen but I've seen pitchers implode over less.

FOUR errors in one inning is enough to make any pitcher implode.

The problem is it ends up being a pick your poison. Let Ortiz give up the 7 ER or let the bullpen. If I were Melvin I would be terrified lately of calling the bullpen.

I am amazes Melvin hasnt pulled a Lou Pinella yet, I remember a Pinella story, it was Lou's first year with the Drays , and he screaming @ the catcher in the dugout" at least make them think, the pitcher can throw a curveball" it was a Lou classic

I doubt Melvin will ever pull a Piniella - now Wally Backman, maybe (hey - he should take over in Tampa when Lou splits - he's sort of the Wally-Mart low cost version of Piniella.)

But I find it quite interesting that Melvin is being blunt and outspoken about accountability issues more often. He said publically Cruz should have had both the balls he muffed today. Although he's defended a few guys - mainly the G-force - when they struggle, for the most part he's not being overly tactful and its not just the Bull Durham cliches.

The Cardinals are the best team in baseball. The ChiSox will come back to Earth and the Twins will win the Al Central although the Sox will compete for the wild card.

At the time this was written, I would have agreed with you 100%. Now, I am not so sure.

I still think the Twins will make some noise in the Central. But like you said, I'm not as certain of it as I once was.
