Diaw or Thomas?

Setting aside the question of what Seattle might or might not have agreed to, which trade would have put the Suns in a better position for the next few years?

1. Trade Kurt Thomas ($8.1 million, expiring 2008 ), 2008 pick, 2010 pick for nothing, saving money this year and potentially freeing up money to use on MLE players over the next few summers.

2. Trade Boris Diaw ($9 million, expiring 2012) and no picks for nothing, saving a little more money this year and in future years, freeing up much more money, but losing a potential future rotation player.

That of course depends on which Diaw we would be trading. As it is, I think I'd rather hang on to Boris since KT would have been gone anyway next summer and we would not sign anyone to replace him. I still have some hope that Diaw will be a significant player on this team. Losing the two picks hurts obviously, but like others have noted, we would have probably lost those picks anyway one way or another.

This is a really tough question. On one hand, if we trade Diaw, Thomas would still only get about 20 minutes a night. On the other hand, if Diaw still sucks next year, it'd be great to get his contract off the books, plus Thomas would come off the cap and we'd have a lot of money to play with. I voted for Diaw, only because if we don't win the title this year, we'd be in a much better situation to be able to win one in the year afterward.

That being said, if Diaw gets good again, the hindsight will be obvious.

Since were dealing with hypotheticals, I choose 3. Not signing Quentin Richardson, Drafting Andre Iguodala and resigning Joe Johnson to 6 years, 50 million. Sorry, I know people are sick of hearing it, but those decisions back in 2004 were precursor to what's happening now. Instead of having those two on the roster and still being in breathable range of the luxury tax, we’re left with Boris Diaw and no picks in 2008 and 2010. I'm no fan of Sarver, but Brian deserves some of the blame for this predicament.

Total savings + future cap flexibility (although there is something to be said of a medium range salary for trade flexibility for a serviceable big) tilts it.

um, Sarver's responsible for the JJ thing - he wouldn't sign off on the deal. That ain't Bryan's fault. Iggy, yeah, but the JJ thing is what kills us.

It would be impossible to trade Diaw without draft picks, so that question is not fair. But its good demagougery
