Tom was clearly uncomfortable. He also referred to the young man "seeing" what they were discussing, then trying to correct it to "hearing" in an embarassing way.
Tom evidently does not have experience talking with blind people. I don't think he meant any harm.
The inning before, the fella was in the radio booth and didn't use discretion himself. Referring to the large D'backs lead, he said something like, "You know the Diamondbacks. They'll probably give up alot of runs now."
Greg Schulte politely tried to get him to recant. When he didn't, Ken Phelps said, in a curt tone, "Why don't we wait 'til the end of the game and see what happens." Phelps was right in not allowing such a negative comment to go unchecked in the D'backs radio booth.
Apparently, pros and amateurs alike can say foolish things behind the mike.
