Great stuff, "Here, why I don't I let you get your feet wet by playing Duncan in the first two minutes of your NBA career."

A week ago I joked that it would Lampe's luck that the Suns would play and lose really close games. Sometimes I hate it when I'm right. :D

The Hawks may be the first chance to get him some real experience. If the Suns keep playing hard, they should win that one decisively. Hey, I said SHOULD. ;)

I was at the game Friday.

Since he was only in there for 2 minutes, it was very hard to get a feel for him. However, the one thing I did notice was he ran as hard as he could up and down the floor. He just had a ton of energy.

So, at least the kid wants to prove himself.

How did he look physically? I cannot get a sttraight answer as to how heavy he is, how muscular he is, how long his reach is, etc. Any clues?

From what little I saw, I thought he was much bigger than Z--closer to Jake I think, although Jake isn't THAT big.

I was wondering. I heard that Lampe was supposed to be 275 pounds, but it was also said that he came to the NY camp out of shape. My guess is that he may have lost some of that weight, but how much?

In any case, both Lampe and Zarko will have to get stronger if they are going to play inside. I'm guessing that Zarko is about 20 pounds lighter than Voskuhl, so if Lampe is about like Jake he would be in the 250 range. Most power players are a bit heavier, but it is about average these days.

Lampe was just too amped!! He overran plays, he shot too quick, and he just was way too excited to play well. He NEEDS playing time!! It was obvious he wasn't relaxed and letting the game come to him. I think he has the instincts, he was just too quick on the draw in that game. We won't know how well he can play until he gets more game time. Everyone says he is just great in practice, and evidently that's where his comfort zone is. I know D'Antoni wants wins, but getting Lampe playing time, if he proves he can be a servicable center before next draft, will help us more next year, than a couple extra wins this year!! I hope he gets more playing time and soon!! :)

It looked like Lampe was the tallest player on the suns bench. I think he is a couple inches taller than Jake. ?

He was definately too excited to be on the court. His 1st shot in the NBA was a turn-around fade-away 18 footer over a PG that barely caught backboard. Hopefully with some weaker teams coming up we can get this guy some playing time to get comfortable on the court.

I think you've nailed the source of the confusion. He came into Knicks camp at an out of shape 275. I read somewhere recently that he has lost nearly 30 lbs. That would put him at 245. There's no point in having the extra weight if its not lean. I'd love to see him bulk up some, but I am sure he will, just because of his age. His frame will change over the next few years and he will add muscle.

Realistically, this kid is 4 years away from being ready physically. He's a project that will take some time.

I think you're right, but I have not seen any confirmation.

My guess is that Lampe will be like Dirk Nowitzki When he first started, Dirk was strictly an SF. He is now big enough to be a PF and sometimes even plays the #5. My guess is that Lampe may more time as a backup PF as he fills out.

I don't think he'll need four years. Yes he might get bigger, more muscular but he isn't that small, he looks a lot bigger than Z to me an he's going to get a lot of playing time. I hope we start playing him more. We've been close these last three games though so I understand why we haven't much...

I too think four years is excessively conservative. My guess is that he will be a factor on offense as early as this year. The limit on his minutes will be on defense.

In many ways, the Suns will are starting from scratch in teaching him to play defense. He played mostly on the outside in Europe and with the Knicks at camp. Fortunately, the Suns have one of the best big man teachers in the NBA in Tim Grgurich (he has done wonders with Voskuhl), so I'm optomistic he will be helpful by next year.

As it is, the Suns already run a lot of their offense with a high post center, but with Lampe they may get to the point of running a Sacramento style high post that runs most of the plays through the center spot. Voskuhl has been hitting a few mid range jumpers, but he is not a major threat as an outside shooter. Lampe could turn into a major threat by shooting if open or hitting cutters if defensed. Since he handles the ball so well, he should be a great pick and roll player as well.

It is a very exciting possiblity - if he can play defense.

Actually, that coach is Mark Iavaroni. He is the big mans coach.

Perhaps I was misinformed. In any case, Voskuhl has improved a lot over the past month or so. It's not just his black eye fashions statement. :D

Grgrich is the Player Development guy, Iavaroni is the Big Man's coach.

Tim is widely considered as the best development coach in the league. For any position, he apparently has a great feel for teaching young players. Even Steph said he learned a ton from Grgurich (in an interview after the trade).

However Iavaroni is the official big man coach. He also coaches at Pete Newell's camp every year.

So actually, you are both right :)
