When I look at older images of Big Red it appears to me that the red in the unis is darker. I used to have no trouble discerning Cardinal red vs 49er red or Falcon red but now days the colors seem much closer Did the Big Red change shades of red?

The pigment shade will always change slightly between jersey vendors and materials. Richer, more vibrant colors are possible today than have ever been available for teams.

Even going from Rebook to Nike could have subtle differences in the shade.

Heck even camera technology has changed enough that colors are more true.

this.

I imagine it is still Cardinal red. They are more committed to the color than the bird IMO.

The Cardinals' "Cardinal Red" did change hue between the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

Circa 1980 through 1988:

(Prior to 1980 or so, NFL teams used custom ink mixes for their colors; manufacturers were supplied tear-off chips for matching. Prior to 1980 however, the chips - I have some - they also match very closely to 202 C.)

1989 through present:

Keep in mind however, that these are colors used for printing. Fabrics, thread, twill colors are matched to this standard print color, but there can be variations.

Starting around 1996, NFL teams started also designating Pantone Textile colors for further assist in color matching. This is the fabric match the Cardinals have designated:

Of course, Nike has their own textile/dye lots, so they have yet another color match:

You can see why there can be variances between all of this stuff. And, I haven't even mentioned the discrepancies between the CMYK simulations, and the differences between the Robison-Anton, Madeira and Coats thread standards...

Sir, you are a wealth of knowledge. I am glad to know it wasnt just my imagination. I would be interested in seeing the Falcons and 49ers reds next to the Big Red. Like I said before back in the day I never thought the reds were even close but now days they look real close. I know the 49ers went through a stage where they were using a cardinal red with cardinal being generic term for the shade back when they ditched the gold pants but went back to their traditional red. I prefer the shade they wore through 1988. In late afternoon games on East coast, night games and cloudy days it came across real nice looking. It was almost a deep blood red to my eyes. Thanks much.
