Do you believe the New York paper?

Luis Gonzalez is telling folks that his recent runway tussle with Randy Johnson started after Johnson pushed him near the water cooler.
Gonzalez also is telling friends he suspects Johnson is "crazy."
"Hothead" might be closer to the mark. The two longtime teammates repaired to the runway after Gonzalez - whose offense was dropping a long fly ball to begin a play in which three runs scored - responded to the push by saying, "You wanna go?"
The trade talk is getting to Johnson. He bizarrely scolded a New York reporter in Houston merely for joining in on Johnson's jokes about the situation. Yesterday, he yelled at a D-Backs PR person for allowing a reporter in the clubhouse during batting practice, as most teams do.
If the $24 million in savings isn't impetus enough to deal Johnson, perhaps the Diamondbacks fear that he will become a clubhouse problem (right before he was traded from Seattle in 1998, he had a shoving incident with David Segui). They're still talking to teams, even after their scouts came back with a dismal appraisal of the "prospects" of the Yankees, the only team to which Johnson has said he'll approve a trade.
From here, the D-Backs look more interested in dealing Johnson than they let on.
Patient boss
George Steinbrenner takes raps for too many firings, but he showed patience with scouting director Lin Garrett before reassigning him recently. Garrett's amateur (double meaning) recommendations helped put the Yankees in this bind. Johnson's practically begging to be a Yankee, and if they don't get him, blame their weak drafts.
Their charge now is turning Jose Contreras into top prospects. The White Sox once offered young outfielder Jeremy Reed for Contreras. But that was before they traded Reed for Freddy Garcia.
Ah, well, at least Boston isn't getting Johnson. If the Yankees are first on Johnson's list, Boston's last.
Yankees people took Javier Vazquez over Curt Schilling because Vazquez is younger. But they knew there were side benefits: fewer headlines, fewer headaches and happier teammates.
Boston will try to sell Johnson on the story of a first title since 1918 over a 27th. Nice try. Johnson may be "crazy" but he's also pragmatic, much to the Yankees' relief.
