Just wondering if I saw what I think I saw.

During the game vs. the Lions, yesterday, on one particular short pass to Detroit's Roy Williams, Rolle came up for the tackle, got a piece of Williams but didn't bring him down. Williams, though slowed considerably, escaped and got a couple of more yards. But, as Ardrian Wilson was quickly closing in on him, Williams sort of slide/dropped to the turf. Rolle was credited with the tackle but it looked to me that Williams dropped to the ground to avoid what would have been a serious thumpin' by A-Dub!!!

Anyone else see it that way? I was incredulous that an NFL player would fear a hit so much that he dropped to the turf; short of the 1st down marker.

Yep, he took a QB slide, rather than taking the hit.

I laughed out loud thinking about seeing a WR slide feet first to avoid contact.

He sure did. Everyone in my section was laughing, even the Lions fans. I told the guy next to me that just because he's wearing a QB's number doen't mean that he gets to slide like one.

That's what I saw. #24 had Williams all lined up in his sights and the cat just rolled into the fetal position.

He slid feet first to avoid a hit. The section where I was sitting all stood immediately after he dove and starting laughing and screaming at Williams. It was bad

Roy Williams took a dive more than once and Mike Furrey did it at least once as well. It prompted Wolfley to say on the radio that those Lions needed to go see the Wizard for some courage. :D

Yeah I saw Roy duck out on that one too. not the first time I've seen an NFL Wr do that of course but sliding short of the first down was pretty bad.

Portland Oregon these days.
We noticed several Lions receivers doing down with the ball after a catch, rather than take a big hit. But that one with Williams' sliding was the most bizarre -- from where we sat, it really looked like Q or Fitz or BJ could have easily had another 3 yards -- maybe more.

The Lions fan behind us hid his face in his hands.

Torry Holt does this all the time. I assume to avoid injuries more than anything and prolong the career.

Exactly! That is the Mike Martz coaching philosophy. It's the exact opposite of Anquan Boldin. Catch the pass and hit the turf. With all the injuries Roy Williams has had, it's not too surprising he'd buy into the concept.

And I don't have a problem with it. WRs are not built for punishment and when you have SS as big as LBs, well I think its safe to say that they should be avoided.

I disagree, like it is said...

If you can't "play" with the big dogs stay on the porch!!!

It's football, not futbol!

Sure it could prolong someone's career but at what cost to the integrity of the game. Franco Harris made the HOF partly due because he would run out of bounds before getting hit. Franco was 6'-2", 230 lbs. a very big back for his era, instead of delivering the hit he would run out of bounds. I hate that! (But at least he didn't dive!)

Give me Larry Csonka or Earl Campbell any day! :soapbox:

Give me a break. Some recievers aren't built to take punishment but a guy like Williams should be battling for every yard he can get. He's a big physical receiver who should never dive for the ground, especially when the 1st down marker is 3 yards away (not to mention how much he runs his mouth). Williams is bigger then Q and you never see Anquan ducking from anyone
