When the Dansby facemask occurred and was tacked on after the 4 yard catch, is it an automatic first down or should it be 2 and 1 the next play? Just curious.

1-10-SF 46 (2:00) 11-A.Smith pass short right to 83-A.Battle to 50 for 4 yards (24-A.Wilson; 58-K.Dansby). PENALTY on ARZ-58-K.Dansby, Face Mask (5 Yards), 5 yards, enforced at 50. Caught at 50.
1-1-ARI 45 (1:52) 11-A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to 21-F.Gore.
2-1-ARI 45 (1:45) 11-A.Smith pass incomplete deep middle to 82-D.Jackson (25-E.Green).
3-1-ARI 45 (1:37) 11-A.Smith pass incomplete short left to 83-A.Battle (25-E.Green).
4-1-ARI 45 (1:34) 11-A.Smith scrambles left end ran ob at ARZ 20 for 25 yards (47-A.Francisco).
1-10-ARI 20 (1:23) 11-A.Smith pass short left to 44-M.Norris to ARZ 18 for 2 yards (58-K.Dansby).

was looking up the face mask rule and found this one:

25. Loss of team time out(s) or five-yard penalty on the defense for excessive crowd noise.

Didnt know about that one!

This is from a writer covering the niners.

Reading your post I wasn't sure.

This should explain it. Crazy how there are rules within rules and if this happens the rule is different(ie recovering fumble under 2 minutes by another teammate doesn't equal TD, where before the 2 minutes it's 6)

"-Some have wondered whether the 49ers got a break on the enforcement of a penalty. On the final drive, Arnaz Battle caught a 4-yard pass and there was a 5-yard penalty added to the end of the play when Dansby was called for a face mask. After the penalty was marked off, it was a first-and-1. The rule is that because it was a scrimmage play and the penalty occurred during the play, the down is replayed. Therefore, it was first-and-1, instead of second-and-1. Nolan wasn't quite sure of the rule either. He said he asked the official in front of him whether it was first or second down. He said the team would have called different plays if it were second down. The 49ers ended up going to fourth-and-1 and converted an Alex Smith's 25-yard scramble"

Due to that rule in the Kingdome, the Seahawks retired the number 12 for the fans in 1984.

For a first post, that's a heck of an useless fact that contributes nothing to the thread

BTW incidental face mask is a 5yrd penalty and automatic 1st down.

BTW no it's not, read the rule is says EXCEPTIONS to auto first down. Whoever posted about the down being replayed was correct.

So you get the result of the play plus the penalty yards and the down over again?

That just doesn't seem right.

I don't know about that call...it looked like Dansby's open hand hit Battle's mask...I couldn't see that Karlos grabbed it at all.

Oh well.

And yet it's true. Picture this bizarre situation. It's first and ten. The runner runs around the right side and gains 20 yards. 15 yards from the original line of scrimmage, a guard gets called for holding. The penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul and the down is replayed. As a result of the play, it's now first and 5.

Incidental facemask is no more deserving of automatic first down status than running into the kicker is, but in any situation, the down would be restored since loss of down is always used as a punishment to the offense.

Thanks.

I knew the facemask penalty is from the spot of the foul not the previous line of scrimmage but I had always thought it was just tacked on to the end of the play. Yet another rare occurrence that seem to make their way into Cardinal games with abnormal regularity.

Tough penalty to get for accidentally brushing the facemask but these guys are so big and strong I guess it needs to be.

I agree. It was a nitpicky call.

Where was the holding penalty right in front of the ref during that 25 yard scramble?

Running into the kicker isn't an automatic first down. Not sure if you were trying to say that, but it seemed that way.

Correct, only a 5 yard penalty. Roughing the kicker is a 15 yard penalty, and an automatic first down.

Probably more important - Dansby's penalty meant we couldn't drain an additional 30 seconds off the clock.
