Didi for Jeff Locke and Tony Sanchez?

Rumor has it the Pirates and Diamondbacks are in talks for a trade which would send Didi Gregorious to Pittsburgh for Jeff Locke and Tony Sanchez.

Thoughts on these two?

Well... he'd fit right in here. Locke is #4 or 5 starter, the Pirates are likely to send him to AAA unless they trade him.

As for Sanchez, he looks like a typical backup catcher.

Not very exciting but what is Didi worth? He might develop into a nice player but at this point he's just a prospect. No team is going to give up a really good starter for him.

One of the problems with the D-Backs depth is that there is no catcher worth a crap in the system. They thought they solved it with Stryker Trahan, but they've given up on that and moved him to left field.

Correct. At this point you have to find a team that is VERY thin at SS.

Don't know if that's the case with the Pirates, but I think that is the case with the Mets.

I'd rather just stick Didi and hope he finds his bat than piss away another prospect for another starter who is no better then the mediocre bunch we've already got on hand.

What is the point of another sub par vet starting pitcher? This is the kind of depth guy that should be signed for a beans in free agency (like how the Dodgers got Maholm for almost nothing), not trading prospects for.

Sanchez has pretty decent offensive potential, but probably will need to switch from playing catcher to be a regular player.

Locke was amazing in the first half last year, but plummeted afterwards. Pittsburgh will need to trade a pitcher soon because the guys that are battling for spots are all out of options.

The Pirates have a young SS in Jordy Mercer who has some nice potential but his splits suck. Clint Barmes is garbage. I don't think they have a thinness of SS to where they need to get urgent for him but I think they could use another one just in case.

You are correct on the Mets. They are bare.

I am going to chalk Locke's second half to inexperience and fatigue as much as anything. If you look at his numbers in the minors, he traditionally has had a very good WHIP and strong K numbers. His biggest concern to me has always been his K to Walk ratio, and his numbers last year did nothing to eliminate those concerns.

As for Sanchez, his biggest attribute is his ability to call a great game and his defense. With a crop of young arms coming through the ranks, even if that remains Sanchez's biggest value, he is worth picking up.

Yeah, Locke did falter after having a really good first half. The Pirates have some really good pitching prospects coming up soon, so losing Locke would be no big deal for them.

I too think we should get more for Didi. He is great defensively and could learn to hit left handed pitching.

The way injuries pile up, I'd rather keep him unless we can land a better pitcher.

I should have mentioned that I don't think the Pirates will make this trade.

Their backup catcher will be out for a while, so they will need Sanchez at the MLB level. Also, I don't really see why they'd want Didi because they don't have a defense problem at SS - it's an offense problem.

That would be concerning reguarding Lock. Any minor league pitchers with + starter potential on Pitt to pursue?

But I imagine then Sanchez wouldn't be thrown into the deal is that problem.
