JACKSONVILLE, Florida -- Dirk Koetter was no longer wanted by Arizona State. But Jack Del Rio made him feel welcome in Jacksonville.
The Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday named Koetter as their new offensive coordinator.
Koetter was fired in late November by Arizona State, but stayed to coach a bowl game loss to Hawaii and finished with a 7-6 record.
Koetter spent the last six years with the Sun Devils, compiling a 40-33 record. His teams averaged nearly 30 points per game in that span. In 2005, Arizona State was second in the nation in total offense and third in passing yards.
The Jaguars fired offensive coordinator Carl Smith last Tuesday despite finishing fifth in the AFC in scoring at 23.2 points per game with Byron Leftwich and David Garrard splitting the starts at quarterback.
But the Jaguars (8-8) closed the season with three straight losses and failed to make the playoffs. That was enough to convince coach Del Rio that changes needed to be made.
Del Rio also named Joe DeCamillis as the special teams coordinator on Monday.
"Both of these men have extensive experience and success in coaching, and they are each a very good fit for our staff and our team," Del Rio said. "I believe they will make a positive impact here on our offense and on our special teams."
DeCamillis directed the special teams for the Atlanta Falcons from 1997-2006. In DeCamillis' tenure, the Falcons punt coverage team allowed an NFL-low 6.1 yards per punt return and only one return for a touchdown.
In addition, the Falcons had the third-most touchbacks (126), the second-most kickoff returns for touchdowns (8) and second-most total return touchdowns (13) during the span.
DeCamillis replaces Pete Rodriguez, who was fired last Tuesday.
